Didn't get a lot of possessions last night, but shut his man down.

When he can shut his man down and get some possies, he will be one of our most valuable players.

Gaining confidence every week and it shows.

Players like Milne, Ablett, Mitchell et al will no longer have an easy ride against us.

Love him to death. For how long had we been screaming for a Baker/Stenglein/Rawlings type that will annoy the crap out of these little turd who always murder us? We've found our man.

1 of the impressive things about the way he goes about it is that he is relatively fair in his coverage. He plays close and tight but he doesn't wrap his opponent in a bear hug, grab the jumper, face his oponent with his back to the ball or throw some sharp jabs into the ribs........Well not normally  He just runs close and backs his pace and reading of the play to beat them 1 on 1.

I noticed that after the Eagles game Kerr gave him a big hug and a shake of the hand so that tells me Kerr knew he been tagged hard and fair.

Well done AJ. Head down and keep it going. Good money per senior game as a rookie make it worth putting in the hard yards.

Regards Cazzesman

Like I said on October 8th 2008 in the Talking Players Thread (excuse the moment to gloat  ), this boy has alot of chracteristics I love in hardness and courage + speed and ball winning ability.

The ball winning ability is clear to see in glimpses so far, once he gets the mix of defensive work and attack right he will be a jet in the Chance Bateman mould.

Does need to improve his foot skills though.

At under 18's level AJ was a ball magnet as a midfielder. A bit like Carrazzo except with a bit of pace. Queries were on his size and disposal.

Has been fantastic this year as a back pocket then a tagger. The next part of his developmment will be as a pure midfielder getting lots of possessions and breaking the lines with his pace which is something we lack.

The beauty of his role now is that it plays to his strengths.

The GPS stats last night were consistent with stats I've seen before where he's compared against others. Consistently runs faster and longer than any other player.

Like his coolness and concentration. So dedicated to the task, will not enter into silly games or get distracted.

Compare him with Thornton as an example:
- opposition shoves T Bird and he goes nuts, loses concentration, gives away a free
- opposition shoves AJ he just absorbs it, shows no emotion and walks back to make body contact with his man.

AJ is a professional.

He steps up to every challenge. A very smart player who makes the right decisions on when to commit and wins or halves 90% of contests. One of our irreplaceable players, and I can't see why he won't become a 20 touch player in the future while shutting out the opposition's best. If he can do that he can make AA. More importantly, he's the sort of player that you need to win premierships.

The best story for Carlton this year by a mile.

This is from a Training report of mine - December 15, 2007.

Quote:
Forgot to mention Aaron Joseph...quick is an understatement - likes to take them on and will annoy the hell out of the opposition...great skills by hand and will give the Bullants a real burst of speed next season - really looking forward to watching him in action.

He's exceeded my expectations though. I can't fault his tenacity, skill or attitude and I absolutely love having AJ and Browney in the same team. Big Kudos to the recruiters on these two.

His handball is very good, quick, accurate and effective.

We needed pace and he gives to us in spades, add that to his courage/toughness and focus and we have a beauty.

Armfield as well, as he has something slightly different at the moment where he gets a bit more of it than Joseph and isn't afraid to burst past players that teams need.

All we lack from a defensive sense is that really creative kicker (ie Gilbee, Drummond etc) which we should look to bring in or develop (Yarran?) and then we're in good shape I think, both in terms of smalls and tall defenders including depth with players like Austin and Anderson etc

I loved it when he was trying to get to Hooper and Jono Brown kept blocking him, AJ showed no frustration or even acknowledgement of Brown, just quietly focussed on getting to his man.

I don't think we can pick a team with all of Grigg, Joseph, Armfield and Browne all add something different in defensive roles that, sadly, Russell doesn't have. I can't see Russell getting a game with those 4 in front of him
