AS CARLTON tries to kick-start its season at Etihad Stadium tonight, it does so knowing that Jarrad Waite won't be part of the Blues' rebirth until early next year at best following his knee reconstruction. It's a crying shame as he was in career-best form and is a linchpin for the team.

What's even more disappointing is that he could have been back in time for Carlton's run at the finals.

But the Blues have ignored that option, as most clubs continue to turn their backs on an alternative technique for knee victims - the Malceski option.

Last year they opted --following the lead of a growing number of sportsmen around the world - to use the new-age reconstruction technique that features an artificial ligament.

This operation allows you to resume playing in as little as 10 weeks, in much better shape than the conventional knee reconstruction as there is no collateral damage to the hamstring or patella tendon that dogs so many players following the operation, and leads to a significant chance of arthritis once their career is over.

Well given Waite has already had conventional surgery it would appear we will be waiting till Round 1 in 2010 at the very least.

It's an interesting point that he raises irrespective of Waitey already having the surgery.

The conventional route always seems to be favoured yet you have a player who is actually playing after having radical surgery, 10 weeks after the event.

I don't watch Sydney because they put me to sleep but is Malceski playing well and has there been any follow up issues with his surgery?

Recovery from ACL reconstructions depends on the severity of the injury and the damage surrounding the knee. Some players have strong stable knees and can come back much quicker that the conventional 12 months.

The conventional method is proven. This new method is not and with a player like Waite is not worth the risk at all

I'd love to see Waitey back sooner than ever but he is far to important to our structure to be risking anything. Get him right and ease him into 2010.

Jarrad already has naturally 'loose' ligaments. So not sure whether that surgery would have worked any better. I'm quietly confident they would have looked at this option, despite the article suggesting the club 'ignored' it. If Doc Barresi is at the Bullants game tomorrow I'll ask.

Not worth the risk given that he wont come back before round 20 and with our current form we may not even play a role in September. If it happened in round 1, different story.

From memory Malcevski did have a few issues post surgery, namely his calf. Not sure if it is related but you never know.

I heard Kouta last week on the radio saying that after he did his knee and trying to get back as quick as possible, caused a few hamstring problems because they take the tendon from the hamstring for the knee, so the hammy is never the same.

Prior to the injury he was the go to man in the backline and very good at it. After the injury I don't think he has been as effective and has been dropped at least twice since coming back. I am not sure whether it is related to the operation.

not sure i agree with healy on this one, i think he's just making a mountain out of a molehill.
while malkevski's operation may have been used successfully for sportsmen in europe, our sport is very unique, and Malkevski is the first one to have the op in our sport. if i were the carlton medicos - and i know jack about medicine - i'd be sticking with the tried and true method until others have the op and it proves successfull. Waite is also a different type of player, and has a much ganglier body to malkevski, playes differently also, and with his already loose joints, mebbe they thought it was too much of a risk for the longer term career. sometimes its better the devil you know, and only time will tell if the new surgery is as good as sold.
i personally would love to see waite out on the park this year, but would also rather not risk him and have him out on the park for another 6-7 years and miss the remainder of this year

The time factor makes no difference, he is out for the season either way, would be crazy to rush him back.

The new method needs more testing - for someone as important as Waite it's not worth making him a guinea pig.

The main issue is will he be the same player?
Healy argues that convential reco's are more risky long term... but he doesn't really back it up.

We just have to cross our fingers and hope Waitey can recover fully
