Post subject:  Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics - the Lance Whitnall Dilema

What is a player worth? How long is a piece of string? Both ponderable questions but only one will get you draft picks!

I will preface this by saying that I don't really want to trade Lance (Gasp of horror from some) but that EVERY player is worthy of a trade if it is the right one.

I have been pondering this.

Nathan Thompson - 1st rnd and 2nd rnd pick for 2004. Laidley is on drugs!

Lance Whitnall - shopped around (I am assuming here)- nothing for 2004.

Stats for Nate

Games Kicks Marks Handballs Total Disp Goals Pts hitouts
2004 19 135 89 54 189 36 20 62
2005 9 77 53 18 95 13 5 32

Lance

2004 19 141 75 61 202 24 14 52
2005 9 81 41 37 118 11 10 28

Why when comes trade time will no-one offer a 1st and 2nd round pick for the big #8? Again I am assuming but he was not touched last year.

Don't take this as a 'Trade Lance post' more 'Trade Lance post if you get a 1st and 2nd rnd pick'!

welcome matty!

and good question.

i'm doubting lance would even net a first rounder in a apparently weak draft. i'm not sure what to do with him, but he should be on a lot smaller salary thats for sure.

i'd trade him for a second and third round pick if it was offered.

There are a lot of players in our side going worse than Lance. People only talk about trading Lance not because how he plays its because how much he gets paid. If he was on a lot less money you wouldn't even entertain the thought of trading him. Dollars cloud people visions.

Lance will be on a smaller contract as will Campo.

I want to keep Lance but there will be a few clamouring for him to be traded.

Unfortunately if you expect to be paid as a top player, you are expected to perform as one.
Every cent Lance is paid is money unavailable to secure other players.

You're right, if Lance was on mimimum wages we wouldnt consider trading him.
But he's not.

Dollars cloud peoples visions because it should.
To suggest otherwise would be naiive.

Trading of Lance should not even be on the agenda. He would be a gun in good team. The sh@* that he has around him does not help. KP's do not grow on trees. I must watch different games to the posters on this site. Everytime he has moved to half back he has beat his opponenet and provided drive. The good work he undertakes in the forward line ie, blocking, creating space, knocking on, ruck work etc goes un-noticed because players around him do not capitalise.

Everything stems to our poor midfield, look at his quarter against the bombers when the midfield was on top.

GAWN!!

Smarts can only get you so far. The game has passed him by.

Lance plays like a footballer whose time is up...
... the body can no longer do what the brain wants it to.

The writing was on the wall last year... and nobody wanted him as a trade-hasn't performed much better this year either.

Good point, BM, and therefore here's the next question...how hungry is Lance going to be (excuse the gag...) on a reduced contract, playing in the twilight of his career?

190cm KP forward?

Hmm...he'd better have a good leap and athletic ability and mobility to make up for lack of size.

Oh...whoops. He doesn't. Whitnall's only good on the short sharp lead, which is never allowed by opposition teams anymore because they just put numbers back in their defensive 50 and crowd our forward line.

If we can get something for him, a draft pick would save money even if he plays for $200K which is pretty much all I would pay him if that.

If he accepted a reduced contract you would surely have to keep him . You couldn't possibly let Lance go and keep the likes of Prendagast, scotland , morrell , Bannister, Deluca, sporn or wiggens there are probably others but Lance is far greater than any of these players

A first round pick is a first round pick, if someone wants to give us that for him we'll take it. But i flower see it, so its back to bread and water for lance on 200-300 k.

Let me see, if Lance was traded last year.. We would be sitting on the bottom on the ladder at the moment with 0 wins 9 losses.

Fired up in the last qrt against Essendon*, we got over line.

Moved onto Tredrea after qrt time, keep him quite after he slaughtered Kouta. Helped to achieve draw.

Fired up in the last qrt against Hairthorn, we got over line.

I agree with bluemarks comments.

Don't forget that Lance's large contract played an important part in his not being traded. CFC didn't want to pay to much of his contract, and no one else was going to pay the whole thing.

It's a whole new box and dice this year. Lance might be worth a 1st rounder (albeit probably not in the top 10) to someone on a $200-300K contract, especially if the draft is weak.

I'm not advocating either way, just pointing out that this year is much more likely that a deal could be reached.

But we wouls have either traded for a better player or used it on a kid ...and had room for the PSD to take someone else we wanted.

We were prepared to pay 200k of Lances contract and noone wanted him...

Lance didnt win us any games.

As a matter of fact Carey didnt give Lance a glowing report on the radio early tonight.
More or less said the game had gone past Lance ... he had to get even fitter than what he was in the Wizzer Cup to have a chance.... (there was no way Lance could have gotten any fitter than that..and his weight has dropped away since.)

Carey said this uncontested fast game just doesnt suit Lance.
Carey says he doesnt work with Lance but concentrates more on the younger players at the club.

Synbad, how could we have got a better player for lance when you reckon his is not worth shit. Traded for a kid would only help in 2-3-4 years.

Are you saying Synbad that Lance wasn't instrumental in getting Carlton over the line in the last qrts against Essendon* and Hairthorn ?? Where were you Synbad, did you go home early at 3/4 time mate....

Interesting comments from the Duck. Lucky he's not costing us anything because I'd be expecting our forward coach to be giving at least some attention to our highest paid forward. Carey's comments may well be right, but it's unlikely Lance will play for the Bullants, therefore Carey should be coaching him.

The problem with Lance is between his ears, and around his gut

I'm just over him and his tempremental attitude.

Im saying if it wernt for eddie Betts we wouldnt have beaten Essendon* and Hawthorn... Eddie is on 35k plus 2k per game... plus the living away from home allowance(if they gave it to him)...

Lance is an overpaid hack!!!!

uh huh..thats what im saying..

IMHO I'd be expecting our HIGHEST PAID FORWARD to be going to one of the GREATEST FORWARDS of all time and ASKING HIM for advice.
