I can understand the theory behind slowing the game down to halt opposition momentum, but I'm struggling to think of a time when the ball's held up by one of our players and we start chipping the ball around wasting time that's clearly benefitted the side. Should we persist with the tactic or should we abandon the tactic? |

Today's football is a game of momentum. In the good old days a good way to stop a team on a run was to start a fight. You can't really do that anymore. Mitch Morton basically cost his team 4 points on Sunday by not making sure his team kept the footy with just over a minute to go. It helps only at the right times. |

I recall 2 games we lost to Essendon* in the 90s where we would have ran over them had they not played keepings off and wasted time. I was filthy back then along with the rest of the Carlton supporters but really it was genius of Sheedy who was ahead of his time. |

Happy with the tactic. We've narrowed it to closing out the last few minutes of a quarter (that's minutes of the term, not minutes of time-on). Leading into half-time we did it for only a minute or so. I have no problem with it being called upon to close out a quarter and give our boys a bit of a rest. I think we also execute it when the work rate is deemed to have dropped off; the runner comes out and tells them to rev it up. That would explain the tempo signal during quarters. |

Yes, it has its time and place. When we are 50-odd points up and in position to completely demoralise the opposition, is not one of those times. ie: Stop it Simmo! Get running, FFS! ![]() |

NO NO NO. I Hate It! ![]() Crap football that is far from creative. It's what you do when you don't know what else to do. Keep the @#$%&! thing moving. |

Should only happen if we're getting pantsed and we need to stop the opposition blowing us away (think Geelong game last year when we did it and did it well). Should never happen when we have the upper hand - that's when I start pulling my hair out. |

Tempo footy is not for the enjoyment of the fans irrespective of the situation. Tempo can be used for a variety of reasons one of the more common ones and which most people only think of is when the opposition gets a run on and is used to halt the momentum, but there are other times where it is used. It can be used after a period of high intensity footy where the ball is bounching from the forward to defense to forward and so on that players get tired and rotations will not refresh all the players that are buggered, so a period of even 1 or 2 minutes will help things calm down and reload for another attack. Also it is used at the end of quarters to prevent scoring so that no team goes to the hudle with their tail up from a last goal. And also used if rotations have left a B grade midfield to compete with the oppositions A grade so that we can get one or two A graders out there to balance the ship. There are teams that don't play tempo footy and the media appluades them for playing all out attack, but a quick look at their percentage will show that no team can sustain the run at all costs gameplan and when they lose momentum, things go pear shaped very quickly. Essendon* a case in point. On the other hand, all recent premiership teams (Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney, West Coast) have used this tactic in various fashions to good effect as part of gameplan and we should continue to do so as well. |

I don't mind it being used, but when its during the middle of the quarter, it does my head in but I'm not sure whether there is a method to the madness from the coaching team to instigate that. |

Tempo footy shall henceforth be known on these boards as 'Kicking it to Kade'. OK, flippant, but as a bloke who can run, as was said earlier in this thread, just back yourself. may be that he's 'empowered' to be the 'hold it up guy', but common sense, please. Appreciate that practicing it for a day when you need it valid, but play good footy and bury teams - you won't need it. |

I reckon its gotten so predictable with Simmo, that opposition teams might start kicking it to him when they want to slow things down... ![]() |
