Has the decision to add the extra kg's on Fev affecting his performance.

We know that he has been hampered by the heel injury and missed many weeks of solid training sessions.

I for one couldn't see the logic behind adding the 8 or so kg's on the big Fev when he's edging closer to thirty. Couldn't see how carrying around the extra weight be a benefit for him when he's getting closer to an age where his body/metabolism may begin to stagnate or even slow down.

The bombers saw fit strip the weight off Matty Lloyd so it would help with running capacity and mobility but still has the core strength.

99 goals in season 2008.......... So if it ain't broke then why try to fix it?

I agree - he can't get off the leash while leading. I think his agility is affected too, not seeing the multiple and zigzag leads

The heel injury makes it impossible to assess the costs and benefits of the extra muscle. And I think it would be pure speculation to suggest that the heel injury itself or the difficulty in overcoming it were caused in part by the extra weight.

Is the extra weight planned or just due to a lack of discipline?
Yes I think Fev should stay at his 2008 weight when he kicked 99 goals.

Was Fev's weight a problem when he kicked 8 against the Hawks?

One thing I noticed yesterday. Have you ever seen Fev so happy on the field when he didn't kick a goal?

It was broke and it needed fixing.
He kicked over a third of our score last year, not healthy.
When we went into our forward line last year we went to him over 60% of the time.
We all need to get familar with Fev games like yesterday for this club to move forward. He needs to be mobile, he needs to work defensively and he needs to be happy when other blokes score goals. I have seen nothing to suggest his body can't do all of this. I would suggest his issues when he has issues are mental and not physical.
His challenge is to perform like he did yesterday ALL OF THE TIME.

Im not having a go at the Fev at all. Thought he did well considering every time we went to him he had three blokes to contend with

Im questioning why the need to bulk him up when he came off one of his best years. He looks to big

I was ok with his game - he worked hard and took nice marks well up the ground. I think what Melvey meant was Fev's body shape wasn't broke - why add kgs?

Sorry mate but your argument makes no sense.

How was it broke?

you wrote 'We all need to get familar with Fev games like yesterday for this club to move forward. He needs to be mobile, he needs to work defensively and he needs to be happy when other blokes score goals'........... wouldn't a trimmer and less heavier Fev be a more 'mobile' contributor?

He is 28 years old and not getting any younger

..as the season progresses players shed weight.. ..and when yer not fat, you tend to shed muscle weight.. ..the extra weight will slowly shed over the season, and he'll be his ideal weight leading up to finals i reckon.. ..don't under-estimate the job presti did yesterday either, plus the diff/new role Fev was playing..

But when your out on the piss, not training at 100% and carrying extra weight you are going to struggle.

Just didn't see the need to change his body size especially when Ratts and co come out saying we need to find other avenues to goal other than Fev. Well wouldn't a trimmer lighter Fev be more mobile and able to work up and around the ground bringing others into the game.

..reports/rumours of lax training efforts (how much attributed to injury) and alledged booze ups aren't exactly what any of us want, agreed.. .. ..but he did bulk up before any of that came into play so i still think the idea was/is sound.. ..just more discipline required by zee Fev..

For what ever reason he is too heavy.

Last year I thought his weight was about right.

Liked the role he played yesterday BUT if he is going to continue in that role he needs to be better aerobically otherwise he will get frustrated and we will see bad old Fev again.

I have not noticed any difference in his mobility. The blokes he has struggled against this year have been in great form: Craig Bolton, Chris Tarrant and Presti. He got beaten by good footballers so rather than thinking what is wrong with Fev it might just have to do with the bloke he is playing on.
What is important is that if he is struggling we don't go to him 60+ % of the time and that he does not crack the shits when he is being beaten and he does all the 1% stuff that he needs to do to help the team win. I was rapt with Fev's game and mental application yesterday. It needs to be like this all the time irrespective of whether he kicks 8 goals or none.

I think he added too much weight and can't see the reason for Fev needing all this additional kilos when he has never been sensational in pack-marking situation and even one-on-ones to a lesser extent. His best asset as been his explosiveness on the lead and great hands when the ball is out in front and having this extra bulk to carry around is not helping. I agree the heel injury makes it hard to assess but the logic of this additional weight is hard to grasp TBH.

Finding additional avenues to goal has nothing to do with allowing Fev to stack on the weight. I would rather the 16 goals we kicked yesterday with Fev adding his 4-5 instead of a player that seems anchored to the ground at times!

It was a strange move when you consider everyone else is going the other way due to the way the game is evolving...

Fev has fast twitch muscle fibres so will always be quick to an extent, but I would think he would be better off losing about 4-5 KG's.

I think he is too heavy and he is getting injuries because of it. Will need to strip down over the next pre season.

Its hard keeping weight/muscles off when you get close to thirty.

What percentage of goals have Fev kicked along with Betts of our goals this season???

I would think Fev is best used a a spearhead inside 50...but with a better structure of forwards around him.

So you reckon its great for Fev to be happy kicking 1 and Betts to kick 3 or 4 when we come up against better teams????

Fev spent yesterday playing a decoy role, taking three or four defenders with him on the lead. Fev being willing to sacrifice his game for the team is yet antoher tactic we can deploy when and where needed. My main complaint with the forwards has around the fact that they are reactive rather than proc-active in thier positioning at the fall opf the ball and the midfields pre-occupation to kicking directly to Fev each time rather than other players who might be better positioned. Fevs weight is not an issue, the type of injury he has is not a weight related one, rather a movement restricting one.
