Swann and Hawthorn's Ian Robson have lobbied the AFL to play Good Friday from next year.


I'm all for this, and if they can tie it in with the Good Friday appeal all the better.

Great to see. Melbourne is not a Catholic city, it's a pluralist, largely secular town. If people want a day of reflection on Good Friday, don't watch the football. I'll choose my own day of reflection. Don't impose your values on me thanks.

Seeing that the AFL has guaranteed the Brisbane Lions access to the Easter Thursday game for however many years, it is the only chance Victorians will get to see a game before Satdy (unless a double header on Thursday is scheduled)...

Then back to work for all of us on this day. No public holiday for anyone on Friday or the Monday.

So the day isn't Good Friday and the Blues and Hawks can push to play footy on a Friday.

Woo hoo.

Against Hawthorn,,,,,,,,,,,,dont know about that.

Yeah its a good idea now that both sides are on the high end of the ladder but the last few years have been blow outs. I would rather see us playing someone like Richmond for a Good Friday Game.

The game always gets a lot of hype regardless where either team is placed on the ladder and it always draws in a HUGE crowd.

Games are already played on Queen's Birthday and ANZAC day. As Deano stated there are many of us who hold ANZAC Day in higher reverence than Good Friday, myself included, so to me Good Friday is like any other day that I don't work.

Like Sundays I don't get paid to sit home on Good Friday so I might as well have a game of footy to watch.

I understand that there will be individuals who have beliefs that conflict with the idea of Good Friday games and that's unfortunate for them if Good Friday footy gets the green light, but there are plenty of people to who Good Friday doesn't have such deep meaning.

Almost every other sport plays on Good Friday.

The best move, IMO, would be to trial a Good Friday match, and let people vote with their feet. If they don't like it, then it will show.

Can't get a better yardstick than that.

Why wouldn't you play football on a public holiday? At the end of the day that is all it is to alot of people.

Yep, sounds good but the crowds will never be big.... Lots of people go away for the 4 days that weekend.

Melbourne is far from a secular city...maybe you should do some homework on that one. Pluralist - yes...all religions co-exist quite nicely and many of them (Christian religions, not only Catholic) - celebrate Good Friday. Also, maybe 'values' is the wrong word? There's absolutely nothing wrong with Christian values...some of my closest atheist friends have 'Christian values'.

Having said all that, I have stated on this subject before that in my life, I have time for both. I would attend Church in the morning - come home, have lunch with my family and go to the football... On the condition that the day was tied in with the Good Friday Appeal, which is all about raising money in an effort to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves - a very Christian thing to do.

I'll think you'll find many non carlton and hawthorn supporters would attend the game.
