Carlton's tackling record reads 82 to 59 to 43 over the first three weeks.
Take a look at the stats for the last match. Four players that scored zero effective tackles were Chris Johnson, Son of Waite, Brett Thornton and Paul Bower. Thats two thirds of Carlton's defense!

Interestingly, the much maligned 'outside' player Nick Stevens gathered 10 tackles, equal with Murphy, and second only to 'new boy', Mitch Robinson (12 tackles). Proves Robbo's special value to the Carlton team.

It's pretty simple isn't it? If we tackle we win, if we don't, we'd lose.

Some of our midfielders and small players only made 1 tackle in the entire game (big tall players are excused) - stevens, murphy, grigg, armfield, russell, johnson, robinson, and houlihan, how the hell can anyone only made one tackle in the entire 2 hours? I don't get this, it's pathetic!!!

Maybe tackles are down because we have increased the time we have possession of the ball.......................................just a theory !!!!!!!!

Can you break down those stats a bit better?

The four defenders you named actually combined for 5 tackles, and I'm fairly certain Bower, Waite and T-Bird had 35 marks or more between them. When you're chopping off that much forward supply, what are you supposed to be tackling?

Johnson was definitely a spectator but those three were sensational in their roles this week, but like the rest of the team didn't move the ball too well.

Stevens had just the one tackle. The whole midfield and forward divisions were down on their pressure.

I think you might be referring to the game against Swans... this thread is about the first three games.
Anyhow the tackling issues still stands. No better stat (esp. tackles within forward line) shows a barometer of a team's commitment.

Effective tackling isn't just about 'stopping' the opposition. It also sends a positive message of intent. I was at the Hawks vs Blues game last year (round 22?) and Hawthorn monstered the young Blues bodies. Remember Pfieffer getting pantsed? The young Blues were so intimidated that they started to try and run around Hawks tacklers, instead of taking them on. Hawks won that match on the ground and in the mind.

You'll find most games Thornton has a low tackle count.
Mitch with 6 was good considering he barely had a sniff.
