I was looking through our injury list (tragic I know), and we now have three longish term shoulder injuries - Pfeffer, Tex and Jamo. It seems to me that the shoulder injury is becoming more prevalent, and more debilitating, and it got me thinking about why? Is it new? I know that from my time (pre-cambrian), the stress on backmen to keep their arms extended around the body to effect a spoil, is vastly increased. We simply clipped an ear, or thumped a hand on the way up. Combine that with the collison on the ground with the arm extended and the shoulder seems to get a real hammering, and its not a joint that takes kindly to that. I watched Judd on the weekend, and he is very cautious about how he grabs players, he is always compact and keeps his elbows in. I myself have a shoulder injury and it is painful, and affects strength. Absent operations, I wonder whether these boys can rehgain their strength to play as they did, or whether they'll have to modify their playing style. Should we be training these guys to play differently? Anyone able to give an infomed view? |

I'm in advertising Vet, can't help the discussion other than to say, great question you have posed and interesting observation about Judd and keeping his elbows in when tackling. |

In my day they didn't know how to reconstruct a shoulder - If it popped out you knocked it back in and got on with it Kids of today - soft as Seriously it is the way they are wrapped up in the tackle and taken to ground . there was no advantage in wrapping a bloke up and driving him to the ground as the ump would call a ball up - Now they try lock their arms and pin the ball to get the held call - add to that the bloke being tackled trying as hard as he can to get his arms free Need another rule change I think to protect against shoulder injuries ![]() |

Is there a way we can blame it all on Pagan? It would make me feel so much better. |

I'm worried about the gravitational field around Princes Park putting more stress on the shoulders of our list. Really, shoulder injuries now are less inhibiting than at anytime in the history of the VFL/AFL. How often now does a midfielder have to stretch his arms above his head to get the ball? Very bloody little. Only people it is an issue for are ruckman and KPs. Walker will be back better than ever with a proper shoulder reconstruction. The bloke is class, not being able to stretch his arms high will not inhibit his game. Might enhance it in fact, more concentration on the contested stuff which Tex is already brilliant at. |

Worried about Jamo's not needing an op. Isn't that what they said about Walks? |
