Interesting situation with our rookies. From memory, I think we can upgrade 2 whenever we want, without anyone having to go on to the long-term in jury list.

I'd like to see Jacobs and Garlett promoted.
But Bentley certainly showed a bit.
And according to Pickering (Pfeiffer's manager), Pfeiffer was promised a promotion.
Even Joseph showed a little last night.

So who'll get upgraded?

We need Jacobs, with Warnock some way off last night showed the importance of having a ruckman winning the tap outs.

Pfieffer's pre season has been fantastic. I don't know why he didn't play last night. He and Bentley may be fighting for a spot.

Garlett needs a year building up and getting used to the game. May get a chance if we get a LTI.

I wouldn't throw young Gartlett to the Lions just yet. I was impressed with Jacobs effort and think that he may get the nod only because of Warnock missing

I think Jacobs, then it could be Garlett, Bentley or Pfeiffer.

I'm not as rapt with Pfeiffer's pre-season and I don't like what Bentley has to offer. Garlett would be a shoe in if he had another 4 kilos on him.

Jacobs is a must for ruck depth.

What has Pfeiffer been doing that's so fantastic? I watched both intra-club games and he did not play in either of them so I presume he is injured.

IMO he has been a stand out all pre season. If he is injured that is disappointing. Pickering also stated that he had been promised a promotion and he is usually pretty accurate.

Pfeiffer IS a nominated rookie.
Whether he deserves it or not is irrelevant now.

There is still one position available and come Round 11, any rookies can play.
Personally I thought Jacobs was OK in the ruck but his second efforts etc were excellent. Lets also remember Hampson is due to return as well.
As for Gartlett, yes he's small and very light but he knows how to look after himself. I'd give him first crack.

Bentley was hard and tough at the contest but he needs to scrub up on his skills quickly. His disposals resulted in 50/50 contests too often.

My understanding is that we can only nominate 1 of them.

We have 2 nominated rookie positions of which one is filled by Pfeiffer.

The AFL have introduced a new rule that rookies can automatically play from Round 12.
(That's what I was told by a rookie listed player, I would hope he would know)

Yes but you can only nominate 1 of them.

That is we have our first 2 one of which is Pfieffer - then after Round 12 we can nominate an additional 1 making 3 in total.

Anyway thats how I understood it to work.

Herald Sun article

Quote:
The 203cm, 100kg Queenslander is on the rookie list. Because the Demons have two veterans (James McDonald and Russell Robertson) and no long-term injuries, Spencer will be stuck in the VFL when the season starts.

But Melbourne football operations manager Chris Connolly admitted Spencer's rapid rise could see him elevated to the senior list during the year. Clubs are now allowed automatically to promote a rookie at the halfway mark of the season.

In my opinion:

- Jacobs only if Warnock struggles with injury
- Garlett not ready for AFL yet and can spend a year with the Bullants. Kicking needs to improve plus he needs at least another 5kg
- Bentley only if Hadley can't get his body right. He might be a better option than Bentick.
- Not sure about Joseph

I liked big sauces efforts on friday night, 18 hitouts is not a bad first game up against some more seasoned players in McIntosh, Hale and Petrie. He is a no brainer for elevation and will fill the gap nicely with Hampson til Warnock is back on deck

Warnock won't be available for weeks yet .

If Sauce keeps up Fridays form he will be as good as Warnock anyway . Keep playing him , and he will keep learning . He has a leg in for the no1 ruck spot now , so give him a chance to make it his .

Bentley is in a long line of similar players on the list , and a long way off a senior spot . Back up player only .

Garlett looks good , but needs games in the VFL for a while to get a proper idea where he is at this stage . Could be around for 10 or more years so plenty of time .

Pfiefer is apparently nominated already , so I reckon come round 1 , Sauce may well be the other one .

Common wisdom might suggest this. But Andrew Lovett was very light when he began, and he hasn't struggled to make an impact. Similar story with Matthew Campbell at North. Perhaps it doesn't matter all that much if you're super quick/agile, and you play on the fringes.

I don't particularly agree with comments that Garlett isn't ready. Remember he is a small forward whose role is to kick goals and provide defensive pressure either perceived or physical. IMO you don't need to be heavy weight to perform this role, you just need smarts, an ethic to defend and pace to burn.

I think Ratts loves him too which is a positive.

You are correct sir.

BV, wouldn't you prefer letting Garlett hit the gym for 4 months, then come out in round 12 with hopefully another 2 or even 3 kilos on his body (and additional conditioning)? I think it would do him the world of good.

It's a shame we promised Pfeiffer a spot because it looks like a waste of one at present. What happens if he suffers an LTI?

If it's true that Pfieffer has already been nominated, i say give Jacobs the second spot.

then after round 11 we nominate Garlett

I really want to see stanton play
