We've just had a few slightly conflicting memories of this game. Sure Carlton were up by a few goals and then Essendon* stormed back, mainly through Daniher. We have a strong recollection of Doull slipping over and Daniher getting an easy mark, and of course memories of the time wasting free paid by Robinson against Fitzy. What we need though is an answer to this: was the Fitzy free the first of these Essendon* comeback goals (ie the linchpin to the comeback) or was it the last of these Essendon* comeback goals (ie taking the game)?

Any strong memories of that game?

From the Blueseum

I remember my brother could not say the word Robinson afterwards unless the word @#$%&! preceeded it.

For me it was the word "chrysanthemum".

Hopefully this will be one of those games 70s/80s that Channel 7 has wiped from its archives and will never see the light of day again.

That game coupled with that Night Grand Final in 1983 have left an indelible hatred for that scumbag team that pre-dates and pre-hates anything the 1993 Grand Final can throw up - but that was pretty bad as well.

i remember it going something like this:

- buckley kicks his famous torpedo goal (longer than blight's kick!) which puts us 26 points up approaching time on

- think Essendon* kicks a goal but not sure

- fitzy has ball taken off him on our HBF in front of the gardiner stand. hawker, i think, takes the kick but doesn't make the distance. even so, a goal results but i don't recall who / how.

- daniher takes 2 chest makes, second of which puts them in front

It was definitely the first. Carlton were still more than 3 goals up when Robinson took the ball away from Fitzy. The ball was handed to Mark Eustice (who we all called Mark Useless) and he moved the ball to Glenn Hawker who kicked a point. Essendon* then took charge of the game and Neale Daniher did the rest.

That he did his knee a week later all but ended Essendon*'s finals tilt as the Bombers lost to Geelong in the final round (they were beaten by Fitzroy in the Elimination Final where Sheedy was forced to use Ronnie Andrews in attack).

It should also be noted that the VFL's 32 umpires effectively resigned on the eve of Round 19 leaving a bunch of youngsters from the Reserve Grade panel to umpire. The umpires won plenty of support from the media and supporters in their pursuit of better treatment from the VFL, and they were back for Round 20. It's highly unlikely that a novice umpire would have paid the free kick against Fitzpatrick (which was the catalyst for the change in momentum) and I guess we'll never know whether we would have gone on to win that game or whether it was exactly what the club needed going into the finals.

I'm gonna throw a spanner in and say it was the last. I reckon Fitzy was wasting time trying to slow down the game after consecutive goals to the scummers.

I was an 11 YO so my recolection probably isn't the greatest - but I remember I, and the crowd went off our tits when it was taken off him. If we were 4 goals up in time-on, I don't reckon we'd have thought they could have pulled it off anyway.

Last, definatley the last.

Article from The Age

What a waste

Fitzpatrick's time-wasting that led to umpire Ian Robinson taking the ball off him and awarding a free kick to Essendon*'s Neale Daniher, who promptly kicked the matchwinning goal, also remains vivid in Southby's mind. Southby said he was not far away and could sense that his skipper, who had just marked, was holding onto the ball for too long.

"I was thinking, geez, we can't lose this (so I yelled out), 'Kick the bloody thing, Fitzy'. And Ian Robinson of all umpires, too. We love to remind Fitzy of it occasionally and I think even he gets a bit of mileage out of it sometimes, positive and negative, mainly negative."

The series' other four magical memories are the 1945 "bloodbath" grand final, Craig Bradley's great running banana goal in 1994, "Kouta's day out" (when Anthony Koutoufides had 40-plus possessions in a match against West Coast in 1996) and Stephen Kernahan's winning goal against Hawthorn in 1993.

As my old mate Deano Supremo said elsewhere for years his brother couldn't say Umpire Ian Robinson's name without prefacing the word "Flowering" before it.

After that incident for me I couldn't say the name Ian Robinson without prefacing it with the words "That Chrysanthemum" Ian Robinson.

I presume that's written years later and they got their information a little askew. Memories fade over time and understandable that the 90 seconds between 'Eustice to Hawker (point) - ensuing kickout resulting in Daniher mark and goal' would be forgotten.

Hawker definitely kicked a behind after Fitzpatrick was pinged for time wasting. Robinson told him to move the ball on twice before he pinged him. Worth noting Fitzpatrick played with a broken hand in that game and for the remainder of the season. Daniher kicked three goals in time on.

*Blues had to wait till 1985 to finally beat the Sheedy coached Bombers....

Pretty sure he did it around the same time we played the Swans on the first Sunday afternoon fixture at the G.

We received a detailed account from a Bombers fan in relation to a request on BigFooty.

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... 20%2C+1981

It is, however, proving very hard to lock-down - there seems to be a number of different memories here and Southby couldn't remember the order. We thought of trying Fitzpatrick!

In the end we think it related to a shot on goal in the middle - probably after the second goal. This fits with maxyblue's comment. We have Van der Haar missing with the set shot, contrary to Hawker as mentioned herein, but there were a few behinds in a row after the 2 goals. We're trying to find a way to prove it - Doc Sherrin is always on the money - but without vision or goal by goal stats its proving an interesting challenge.

You would think someone at Essendon* would have kept this footage?

Kevin Sheedy? Their footy museum?

Or the ABC maybe?

Even though I said that we should never speak of this game again  .

The anal retentiveness in me cant reisist trying to track down the right answer for the sake of accuracy.

Even though Channel 7 has wiped these games from the Video Library - I am pretty sure that they would have snippets of this game on other programs they have put together. I do recall a few of those highlight shows that Rex Hunt fronted/hosted like "Biffs, Bumps & Brawlers" and another one called "Fantastic Comebacks" (or similar) and I am pretty sure they would have in time sequence order the goals that were scored in that last quarter. Not sure what relationship "The Blueseum" has with Channel 7 - but a search of their video library may still find this show that might have the evidence.

I was there standing in front of the then Hawthorn stand. Luckily I still have a vivid memory of that great goal by Jimmy Buckley to the Lygon street end that sent many Essendon* fans to head for the car park. I'm sure the Fitzy timewasting free didn't lead to the last goal, but it definately changed the whole mood with only minutes to go. That game aside I'd love to be able to get video of games from 81-82. That Carlton side was fabulous to watch.
