Just wondering if Chris Newman is the lowest draft pick to become captain of an AFL club? I think he was drafted at 55 in 2000 but stand to be corrected on that too. A topic for someone with a bit of time to put some research into. |

James Hird's position on the list should have an asterisk next to it. *Alleged Draft tampering. |

It was run of the mill stuff back then, the only thing that made it stand out was that on this occasion it actually worked and produced a player with a very good haircut. |

A topic for someone with a bit of time to put some research into. Dean Kemp was an additional selection in the 1989 draft. 116 players were drafted before WCE picked Kemp and two or three players as additional picks. ![]() That's what you call draft tampering... |

The way I understand it, Hird (and his family), made it an open secret that he wouldn't play for any club but Essendon*, and if drafted to any other club, wouldn't play. Draft. Tampering. |

Draft. Tampering. Didn't Essendon* send him off to play junior footy in Canberra or somewhere so he wasn't as exposed to recruitment staff from other clubs? |

He was playing with Ainslie in U12 because he was in the same team as Nafan Buckley. |

I don't know the details exactly but when he was drafted I read a couple of times that the Bombers had "hidden him away in the ACT". |

I think the use of that phrase is merely Essendon* spin covering the egregious draft tampering. After all, what else could they say? |

James Hird was never ever going to play with anyone else but Essendon*; and everyone knew it. James' Father played a few games for them.....while HIS Father; ex player Allan Hird, was legendary President of Essendon* for many many years..... ..so successful was he in fact; that the main grandstand at Windy Hill is named "THE ALLAN T. HIRD STAND" in his Honour. So....the HIRD name is held with deep reverence at Essendon*. |

That's all well and good, but the draft is there for a reason, and the Father/Son rule, is a bending of that in deference to family tradition. I'm all for family tradition, but what the Hirds did bent the rules way beyond normal. |

I'm all for family tradition, but what the Hirds did bent the rules way beyond normal. I'm not defending anyone....and couldn't care less what Essendon* did or didn't do.... ....I'm just stating facts for those young posters who have asked in this thread what happened .... ....Pick #79 in 1990 says it all. P.S. What a pox draft it was too! with Steven Hooper at Pick One; and James Cook at #2. Only Matt Clape at #9 to the Eagles; and perhaps Nick Daffy at #49 and Jason McCartney at #4 went on to have any impact.....apart from Hird. |
