One of the most revealing interviews you could read. A number of mysteries solved by Ratts as to where certain players will lineup. Good news about Santy too! :cool:

I haven't listened yet, but from the quote, thats what you would expect Ratten to say though - even though we may have tried to trade him, it is time to move on and ratten's job is to inspire all his players to achieve their best and make them feel important.

It is up to Setanta to perform (which I am confident he can, I do like him)

Agreed.
Setanta will only be a regular in our 22 if one of the following happens:
- we get hit by injuries to Bower, Jamison, Waite or Thornton (Jamison's shoulder might be a problem)
- Austin doesn't come on as hoped

I think he can be a handy depth player however.

I seen enough of the high ball kicked into the oposition's forwardline to their tall targets and Jamison, Bower and Thornton looked like dwarfs. So I don't know how Hurley (being shorter than the 3 mentioned) is going to play taller than them.

Have a look at what we had to put up with in the last 6 rounds when we Setanta was injured.

Look, can't you guys just take Ratten's last 2 public comments made on face value. If you can't see the value of 199cm mobile tall defender over a 193cm defender then you are missing something; that's your problem.

I think Brett Ratten gave the typical media responses you would expect.

The rotation policy at CHF doesnt grab me ....Fisher, Walker etc are not CHFs and to me rotation is an excuse when you dont have the real deal CHF to play in the position week in week out...
I like structure and good Carlton teams have always had good CHF's....not fill ins ..

re: Setanta.....I'm a fan and think he can play but I'm not sure Brett Ratten is....sure he is saying the right things etc etc but in truth was happy to trade Setanta and send him on his way for not that much but couldnt get a deal done and he had one year left on his contract so he couldnt easily discard him.

Setanta was out of favour, had a worrying injury problem and was overlooked for the likes of young Mark Austin last season.....where does that leave Setantas long term future?

My view is he will spend most of the season in the Bullants unless injuries or poor form open up some spots and a player like Austin preferred or even a young draftee like Hurley/Trengove if they were recruited.

I was more interested with his CHF views. Seems like Kreuz, Fish (why?), Cloke and even Tex will go through there depending on ground and match-ups. Harts not on the radar? Waite will stay back most of the time, too.

Seems like Ratts doesn't want Kreuz there all the time whilst a wee kid, but you get the feeling that's where he sees him long term. Love it.

No offence, but Hurley next year at 192cm and giving up 10 - 20 kg would probably get murdered. He would get murdered by J Brown. An 18 year old KPP is not the answer, he will need somewhere between 2 and 4 years. We NEED Setanta next year as there is no one else to take these kind of guys.

That's the point, and until there is a very tall alternative Setanta is important.

The issue regarding Setanta being shopped around should not imply Ratts was trying to off load him. IMO he was after some high draft picks and realised Doggies need. I would have loved the opportunity to draft:

Great Mid: Hartlett or Yarran or Ziebel

and a

KP: Trengove or Hurley or Watts etc

The point is we didn't trade him because the value on his head was too high for the Doggies...they got a FS pick to fill their void and he's 198cm tall.


Setanta is important on our list until the kids grow and surpass him. Austin is no where near it based on 2008 form.

Lets not forget that Ratts said that setanta was the man to keep the Big guns, and that he also made mention of it, after he was injured when the opposition big boys creamed Austin, Thornton, Jamison and Bower in the last line of defense; that's where we lost our season, other than in the ruck in general around the ground play.

I'd be happy to see the kids pass Setanta, but I'm not holding my breath all of 2009 for it to happen; we after a spot in the 8.
