“Importantly Victorian members will continue to have access to 11 games in Melbourne during 2009 and 2010 with free entry to one designated away game each year to compensate for a home game being played on the Gold Coast,” Swann confirmed.

That's what I want to hear!

That'll quieten a lot of whingers in regards to moving to the GC...

...just wondering - if you have a reserved seat membership - I'm guessing you'd still get reserved seats, but not your usual ones?! :?: :?:

If it's against Melbourne or North Melbourne then you can choose any seat you like. They'll all be free.

whingers???? so if someone expresses a negative opinion to this load of crap they're a whinger?

i don't care for the spin. its bullshit any way you look at it.

it isn't growing the @#$%&! brand. its a bit of extra coin in exchange for a pathetic image for our club.

shit clubs sell their 'home' games. this isn't creative or lateral thinking, its following the foot steps of North, Bulldogs, Melbourne and St. Kilda. its great company we've put ourselves in. We're supposed to be football elite. not alligning ourselves with football scum.

Don't forget to add Hawthorn to that list.

It's money for jam. It's against interstate teams, and could net us some extra members.

It's a no brainer cranium....

if its such a no brainer why aren't collingwood and Essendon* doing it? I'll tell you why. Because they see it as being for lesser clubs. and so should we. i can remember smorgo a few years talking about selling home games interstate and everyone was up in arms. now Swann says it and we lap it up. It may be slightly different but its the same principle. good clubs do not sell their HOME games. it's been annoying to play North and Bulldogs interstate as away games, but our own game... i just never saw us taking such a course, particularly now that we are back on our feet.

Agree with Cranium.

If we are serious about being the strongest club in Australia, we need to be able to make our money without selling our home games, without selling our soul.

The biggest clubs in the world all base their success and power on one thing...identity and history. Ok, that's 2 things, but you get what I mean.

Manchester United, Liverpool, Dallas Cowboys. Collingwood and Essendon*. Yes my friends, the Filth and Scum. They are the 2 biggest Melbourne clubs, and they wouldn't dream of selling home games.

We are Carlton. We are a Melbourne based Club. We play our home games in Melbourne. We do not sell our soul for cash. We find ways to make our money without compromising the essence of the Club.

Because if we sell out soul for cash, then all we do is become another version of Demitriou's AFL. Cashed up, devoid of meaning and unloved.

Collingwood were offering to go at one stage and play 3 games there like Hawthorn do in Tasmania. IIRC the other clubs weren't so keen on letting them.

rubbish. collingwood were never going to play 3 home games up there. fat ed offered to play 3 away games up there. ie freo v collingwood, west coast v collingwood and adelaide v collingwood. with collingwood being the away team. they were always having their 11 home games in melbourne. no-one was keen on that because it essentially meant collingwood didn't go interstate except to GC. would anyone be keen on letting that happen?

we are still the AFL's bitch.

It hurts to say this but at this stage of our recovery you cannot compare us to the Scum and the Filth from a bank balance point of view. Yes they do not have to sell games because of their financil position however we are still recovering our position with debt and a redevelopment to fund.

We are moving a game from TD against an interstate club, so we are turning a potential $$ loss to a handsome profit. If we were playing Brisbane that I would have some concerns but gee we are playing Fremantle who probably would have a bigger grudge as they have to travel there from Perth.

Oh by the way the premier league clubs want to sell games to Asia for $$, why marketing.

Jezz1966 has summed it up pretty well.

I understand what you guys are saying, but in our current position (still 5-6 mill in debt) we just cannot pass up such big $$...

If we still get 11 'home' membership games in Melbourne, exactly what difference does it make? Except that we gain $400,000 that we wouldn't otherwise get from our current stadium deal.

I'm not sure that I quite understand the hysteria.

The pies are not worth comparing because they have a draw unlike any other team, the fact is they have brand recognition and it is well known they are the most recognised AFL team in the country, we need to also build our brand.

Essendon* have the best deal at TD out of any home club and therefore if we had the same deal we would not be selling 1 TD game for 2 years.

If you had been at the Gabba this year, you would realise that there is a very big CFC fan base in a growth area and this needs to be developed, especially with marquee players such as Judd and Fev.

Shit club that - moving their games to Tassie.

Didn't get them that far. :P

It's probably bankrolling Buddy Franklin.

And this game plus an extra 100K or so bankrolls Judd.

But that's ok, keep the image and find an extra 400K elsewhere... god knows the social club is RAKING IN THE CASH! :garthp:

The $$$ will come in handy while the AFL have money to burn because with the current financial crisis the world is facing, the next AFL rights are not going to be as good IMHO and in addition sponsorship $$$ are going to be very tight for the next few years.

Collingwood and Essendon* ARE doing it, but marketing it much differently.

They have a regular fixture at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney, and have a fair bit of associated PR with it (like in previous years, Sheedy would coach the North Shore Bombers for a match in the Sydney AFL).

There's a whole lot of
Image
associated with this.
