As good as Hawthorn have been in 2008 I think most of us would agree they sorta pinched the 2008 Flag. Cats had lost just one game for the year and dominated hard ball gets and I50s in the first half in the Grannie... and yet the Dorks still took home the bacon.

My question is, have we ever pinched a Flag and if so when was the last time we did that?

Please no comments about rorting the cap, that's not the sort of pinching I am talking about.

Big Nick says in his book "Big Nick' that we had an ordinary home and away season in 1970 but who remembers an ordinary season when you win the greatest GF in history?

We pinched a GF spot in '99, but that's it in my lifetime.

Sounds like we haven't pinched one for a while, so maybe our time is due?

I'll concede that we pinched 1970 - but in 1972 we finished a clear top of the ladder in front of Richmond.

In 1970 Collingwood were clearly the better side during the home and away season - but the beauty of our game is that the ultimate prize is not decided on the home and away season. 8)

As was evidenced 2 Saturday's ago.

The Tiggers smashed us in the 2nd semi and started favourites in that 72 GF.

The Blueseum doesnt have a specific page to answer this but note the following:

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-index.php? ... r+Premiers

...particularly that on 5 occasions we've won a Premiership without being Minor Premiers.

From the Blueseum

The cats must have been well over the salary cap in 95 . I wouldn't say we pinched that one but we did well to overcome their advantage.

Nor was I, but I remember hearing about it for the first time. First it made me lollerskate at the Colliwobbles, then I just felt very proud of my club.

If you've not heard what happened, just let me know, I'm sure there'll be plenty of takers here to help you out.

Although '82 was back-to-back flags for us, we did come from 3rd to win the premiership that year. Maybe we didn't exactly pinch the flag, but Richmond was the best team in the competition during the H&A that year (followed by Hawthorn), and they beat us soundly in the 2nd Semi Final. They fell in a screaming heap on GF day and basically haven't recovered since...
