Im not into individual awards or personal glory sorta stuff. Its flags that count for mine. That is the measure of success as far as im concerned.................BUT.................After the counting of votes for the 2008 Brownlow "The Carlton Football Club"heads the list for the total of most votes recorded in the Brownlow medal since its inception. Interesting stat. But we haven't won too many Brownlows. I guess the Brownlow is a bit like a chook raffle. You don't know what you are going to get. I mean if woewodin can get 3 votes for obtaining 12 possessions in a game then anything can happen and Williams can miss out for 35 possessions -then it is a raffle. Saying that - i guess Judd has to be exceptional to get the votes. if he has a very good game he might not get the votes due to the higher expectations we have. Would like to see a Carlton player win it soonish. That would be nice. |

i also stumbled across this stat after the brownlow. it's quite an achievement to have the most brownlow votes of any team yet probably the least (?) brownlow medallists of any team. an indication of how succesful we have been as a team rather than having a few standout champions (not that we've had any shortages of them either). http://stats.rleague.com/afl/brownlow/teamtotals.html Carlton 4845 Essendon* 4841 Geelong 4708 Collingwood 4701 Hawthorn 4618 North Melbourne4438 Western Bulldogs 4423 St Kilda 4420 Sydney 4406 Richmond 4391 Melbourne 4206 Fitzroy 3427 West Coast 1567 Adelaide 1228 Brisbane Lions 913 Port Adelaide 870 Fremantle 782 Brisbane Bears 508 hang on, richmond are 10th. ![]() |

Sydney are 9th and IIRC have the most Brownlow medalists. That must make it a good ninth |

And yet we only have 4 winners. Goes to show that champion players don't always = champion clubs. |

Traditionally havent done that well in Brownlows as we have had just too many good players in the same side pinching votes from each other. Traditionally we also used to poll the most Brownlow Medal votes of any club each season as well. ![]() Footscray and South Melbourne have had so many Brownlow Medallists because in the old days if you were a decent player in a shit side you generally got votes even if you lost. These days rarely happens. Having said all that in recent memory the following Carlton Players have been really stiff not to win Brownlow. - 1981 - Rod Ashman won just about every major media award that year and finished 2nd in the Brownlow to Bernie Quinlan and Barry Round by one vote (Carlton polled 96 Brownlow votes that year 10 more than 2nd placed Fitzroy). - 1985 - Justin Madden had a stellar season and finished second by one vote to Brad Hardie - who spent most of the season in the back pocket chasing kicks and had every forward pocket in the VFL kick bags of goals against him. ![]() - 1987 - Paul Meldrum finished 2nd (5 votes behind Lockett Platten) after polling 5 best on grounds in the first 8 rounds) - wasnt even actually at the count that night from memory - (Carlton polled the most Brownlow votes that year.) - 1990 - Stephen Silvagni finished 3rd only 2 votes behind winner Tony Liberatore - spent most of the season at CHB with a few great cameos up forward. Carlton had a relatively poor Brownlow year that year finished 8th). - 1993 - "Moral Triple Brownlow Medallist" - Greg Williams finished 2nd to Gavin Wanganeen ![]() - 2000 - Anthony Koutoufides - finished 4th 5 votes behind Shane Woewoedin ![]() |

And from memory Silvagni turned the game against Geelong that year, being shifted to CHF after half time, steering us to a 10 goal turnaround in a half. Carlton, D. Fotia, 3 votes ![]() |
