CARLTON coach Brett Ratten says a return to finals football is the only yardstick his side should be measured by in 2009 and warned his players the road back to September starts now.

Speaking at the club's John Nicholls Medal ceremony on Thursday night Ratten reflected on a resoundingly positive 2008 campaign, but said the club and its fans can't be satisfied with anything less than playing in finals next year.

"Preparation, is vital, and if players think they can come back in the wrong shape, [they] will pay a hefty price; 2009 will springboard us to where we want to go," Ratten said.

"We need to grow as a team by 25 per cent across the board to make sure that we can play finals football. The Carlton Football Club is about playing finals football. We didn't achieve that this year and we haven't done for seven years; it is a failure.

"Who is going to give us the opportunity to play in the eight? No-one is going to surrender that; we must work harder than them.

Fev wants his share too

Quote:
"I think the way the game's going, and for us to be a better team, I don't think I need to be kicking 100 goals," Fevola said.

"Hopefully I can kick 60 or 70 and you get two or three other blokes kicking 30 or 40 and get six or seven players, like a Geelong team, kicking over 20 goals.

Thats the thing I have wanted to hear from Fev since he kicked 99, Fantastic to hear this guy want the club to succeed more than for him to kick 100

Fev kicking 70, Kruz as a permanent forward (now thats Warnock is probably coming over) kicking 40 odd Betts kicking 20 along with Walks (playing part time forward) has me salivating and us destined for the 8

Fev you are a champion mate

This is the only part of Ratts' speech I don't agree with.

The Carlton Football Club is not about playing finals football.

it's about winning finals football.

It is the vibe Warby :-D

The "Blues" vibe. All Blues fans know this "vibe".

It's the SUCCESS vibe. The vibe all supporters & players of this club have felt at some stage & for some, the very reason they barrack for Carlton in the 1st place. Not for me tho, I fell in love with the guernsey as a 8yo kid & the rest fell into place. :-D but I digress.......... with our widely known & respected success over many years, we as supporters have in us an ability to sense when this success is just around the corner & it's coming. Question IS? How fast is it comin????

Carlton ARE back & the players will be expected to carry that feeling on next year & perform accordingly. No flowering around now. Poor performances will not be tolerated one feels (& hopes). Ratts should have a very good idea now of what he's got to use at any & all given moments against whoever they play & he too will be expected to grow in his coaching, as these kids grow & develop & the team continues to mould together.

As Ratts said, the 1st step was to get that Carlton feeling back, both at the club, & then more importantly, in the way we play our footy.

I wreckon CFC is just about where they would have hoped at this stage heading into 09, across the board but as I said more importantly on the field. Go the kids & you "older" gentlemen of the team had better get yourskates on too, as these kids are gunna be hungry. Woo hoo.

Good times ahead :-D

Not being Greek, I don't understand "mounara". I gather it's probably not complimentary to the girl.

I think it might be Laetitia Casta.

Ratten better get us into finals in 2009.

I think over 90% of Carlton supporters will accept that as a given expectation.

That is actually a big ask for a team that has not figured anywhere near finals football for many years.

Ratten cannot expect just the improvement in Judd, Murphy and Gibbs to get us there on an armchair ride.

If the Blues are 4- 7 at the halfway point of 2009 under any circumstances I would expect the senior coaching position to come under intense scrutiny,

Interesting....

Could Ratten be sacked if we don't make finals next year? Should he be?

The two best things Ratten has done, that don't include actual individual player development or game plan/strategies, is get players up for great last quarters (arguably Cordy's ace?), and reinforce that failure is unacceptable at Carlton. The latter point I think is very interesting. Carlton people seem to be very happy with our 11th placing, and while it's great we have won a number of games this year I personally think 11th is shithouse and I hope the players see it this way too. We are a long way off being where we should be, 11 spots and about 10 extra wins to be precise, so it's good to see Ratten lay down the law.

Too many ifs and buts....lets wait until April/May to see how we're going.

I believe this year it was almost a given that we would win 5 more games on the 4 we won in 07

Because of Judd
Stevens in some games

which freed up Murphy and Gibbs
and Kreuzer won us the game at Port

We were going to improve with the natural improvement of Jamisen who will be a gun 200 game player, Grigg, Bower.

I reckon we have done well with Browne and Armfield

Browne in particular will develop into a handy player

Dangles needs to improve his decision making and kicking but he has pace and has a real crack

The next step is to win 12 games or more which will be harder

A dominate ruckman and another key marking forward is needed

Ultimately if we are going to challenge for a flag we need to aspire to the heights of Geelong and Hawthorn

That means no softies lots of key targets and defenders who not only defend but can run and carry and kick the ball pin point in an offensive manner

Some regulars on our lists dont do these things and will hopefully be replaced.

With this upcoming draft the last draft before the concessions come in for the GC we must recruit smart.

THis draft is absolutely CRUCIAL

When talking about Ratts as Coach....who's been there 5 minutes.....I think of Geelong and how the knives were out for Bomber Thompson who ended up winning a Flag with a side who the critics said wasn't being coached properly.

Maybe they weren't being coached "properly" and he changed a few things and found the holy grail.

IMO, the review Geelong had was, whilst over the top at least in the media's eyes, the catalyst for a lot of change through introspection of each individual concerned with the running of the football department and its players.

There is no doubt Bomber would have changed a few things, most i'd imagine would have been subtle changes but changes there definitely would have been.

Yep.....but don't forget that Bomber Thompson next year is in his 10th year as Coach of Geelong......10 years.....a bloody long time.
