..Teague has been outstanding in his role with the Bullants and also with Carlton as a Development Coach and there is no doubt the success of the role with the improvement of both his VFL team and many of the young Carlton players in 2008. His assistant Matthew Lappin kicked two goals and his role on the ground with the young players in the VFL has been invaluable. Similar to Teague, Lappin has been very successful combining his role with the Bullants and his Development Coach duties with Carlton..

Looks as though they're held in high regard and are set to continue..

That doesn't mean that things won't be fine tuned and extra assistance given to them.

Who wrote the rave review?
Someone from within the club that wants to put a positive spin on everything. Ratts wanted to retain Mitch so Teague as coach was a compromise. I think Teague has great potential, is intelligent, considered and a great role model, but I can't believe having two totally inexperieneced retired Carlton players taking over all the responsibilities of development, playing and coaching was the best possible outcome.

Keep Teague but get him some experienced help, have a non playing Ants coach and some experience in the development area. Some of our young players have gone forward, some have not progressed or have gone backwards. We need to understand why, and rectify it rather than saying everything about the club that finished 11th is great.

Remember the Tiges went from 16th to 9th. Out performance was promising and adequate nothing more. That goes for seniors, Ants and development.

Yeah, they were just rebuilding last year for an extended crack at ninth again this year and into the future.

I couldn't think of a better person to be a role-model to our youngsters than David Teague. He can show them what's required at AFL level.

Very true. Anyone who has ever spoken to Teaguey or listened to him address the players would see he will be very good in his Development role. It was year 1 for him in 2008 and like anyone embarking on a new career there is always plenty to learn.

Teaguey is a very well educated man and he knows his stuff. Give him a chance to sit down with others and evaluate the last 12 months and I'm sure 2009 will see him and his development staff taking huge leaps forward.

Agree 100 % with the above comments.
Also like to add the guy is fearless. He sets a magnificent example to the young guys...............suggest his critics get around the huddle and tune in.He is highly articulate .Always super positive........
Mark my words......Teague will one day be a senior coach and be highly successful.

Well there you go. I was of the opinion that this was an area that the club really needed to look at and improve because I just didn't see the results. Players like Hampson, Pfeffier, Aisake, Jackson, Benjamin, Edwards haven't seemed to have gained a great deal out of this year... and some have gone backwards. I was hoping that the club was planning to invest heavily in this area, maybe pinch someone involved in the Collingwood or Adelaide programs, and revamp the whole development system for 2009.

i did. We won 10 games and were very exciting. Development works all the way down the line. There's 44 blokes on a list not all will improve. Hampson as a ruckman, has another year under his belt. Those guys take a few years, and Jackson's had some injuries. Doesn't leave many others.

Most of the young players that have improved in the seniors were senior players anyway. Murphy, Gibbs, Grigg, Bower, Jamison, Kreuzer, ect played very little VFL footy this year and were therefore part of the senior program under Ratten.

Of the young players who've been developing in the VFL I would say that only Austin has improved significantly. Armfield has been pretty good but was a mature recruit. Oh, and you'd throw in Browne as well who was excellent.

I would think that Teague, Lappin and (unofficially) Williams have full responsibility of development irrespective of where the kid is playing. There is just as much development happening on the training track as there is on gameday. Ratten would provide input but he has enough on his plate to worry about development.

I agree with positive statements re Teague, but I can't believe that any supporters think our development set up is equal to the best in the League. We need to put more resources and experience into it. We have had our big go at the draft and we now need to ensure it pays dividends. Do we have the best development set up in the League? If the answer is no then we need to ensure we do.

I agree with Andain, there are a significant number of players who haven't gone forward.

We need to have done really well with our drafting and do exceptionally with our development because after this year all the talent is going to GC17. I am very sceptical of Carlton's continuing 'jobs for the boys' processes. If Teague is the best in the League at planning and running a development program then that's is great. If he is not, get the best and have Teague work with them.

I think we performed adequately this year given the addition of Judd and Stevo and the removal of the former coaches, but we didn't see any miracles or anything to get smug about. We are a work in progress and how we progress will be to do with having the best person in every job rather than the most covenient.

Give Teague the resources and the experienced team to ensure we have the best development set up now, not that we will eventually be the best at development when we give our development guys a few years to gain experience

So you agree that most of the ones that have gone forward are more to do with Ratten and most of the ones that have gone backwards are to do with Teague?

I am not in the "Ratts is a genius" camp either Woof. I think there are various reasons why some guys develop and others don't. Development programs are crucial but not the sole issue. There are a lot of unpredictables with human beings. My main concern is that we placed development in the hands of two ex Carlton players who had no experience. We should be aiming to be the best at everything off the field in order to be the best on the field.

As I've said I think Teague has great potential but he was given too many roles and no experienced support which was old Carlton administration all the way. To what extent this may have hindered player development is impossible to quantify. But we, as a club, need to be very self critical and need to ensure we are the best in all areas.
