With the draft / trade period coming up, we thought it would be worthwhile to explore a bit of the history of our 'first pick' (particularly given the idea that it would be a useful bargaining chip this trade season).

Carlton has traded our first pick away 6 times (traded up for earlier picks above our normal picks twice)....

1. Can you name all 6 players received? (6 x 1/2)
2. Which is the only player on the list to have played in a Premiership at Carlton? (1)
3. Which 2 players are the only ones to have played a minimum of 30 games for Carlton? (2)
4. Of the remaining 4, can you put them in order of games most played for Carlton?

Of course, the answers can be found in a summary article (below) but have a stab first...

Always remember Devenport and O'Reilly as the the one's we got for trading away.

DownUnderChick, they are two of the more infamous trades, but we've traded away our top pick on 4 other occasions.

Devonport - end of 1995 (Pick 19)
O'Reilly - end of 1999 (Picks 16 and 46)

We also did it at the end of 1988, 1991, 1996 and 2001.

Perhaps another hint...2 of the remaining 4 had surnames starting with Mc....

You would have thought that 92,93 & 94 would have taught us something - but other than that (and the past 5 years) its been a flowering train wreck.

10/10 thehalford, great work.

There is a much harder quiz in the Blueseum just waiting for you (follow the article link).

That's the thing that really doesn't make sense to me in all of this Agro. Whilst the team was improving and becoming a top team, making the 93 GF, we were still utilising our first picks. Although Beaumont was shaky for a number of years, Carlton still had the brilliant McKay and Camporeale draft choices (low to mid teends) who each quickly became key players in an already good team. its not like we had to wait for either to develop with McKay playing Round 1 1993 and Campo I think playing all 25 games in 1995.

But then after the premiership, it looks like arrogance took hold and they couldn't allow the slide. For not one 'first pick' from Camporale up to Andrew Walker to play 50 games says that our poor recruiting has much more to do with our slide 2002-2007 than the draft penalties ever did.

Dal Santo.

Greg Stafford to Richmond was involved somehow as well, IIRC.

I blame David Parkin for this - dont get me wrong David Parkin was a great coach and a legend of the Carlton Football Club insofar as coaching is concerned.

However his theory on recruiting ie: recruit mature strong bodies from the senior football competitions in Australia (WAFL, SANFL etc) was seriously flawed and in particular from the mid-90s onwards when the vast majority of talented juniors were already being streamed from the TAC Under 18 Competitions - any players that made their way to the senior football competitions by that stage were the "leftovers" - they may have had "mature and senior bodies" but they were second rate footballers.

People blame Shane O'Sullivan for our poor recruiting during this period but he was seriously hamstrung by what he was allowed to do and this all eminated from David Parkin's "Mature/Senior Body Theory".

Technically we traded our first pick for Chris Judd since Kreuzer was a priority pick selection.

Good point, thanks for that. We've added that as a footnote to the article. The idea was to focus on whatever 'first pick' we had and not get into a first round pick analysis which is covered off elsewhere.
