Roos stays, takes swipe at Carlton Quote: SYDNEY coach Paul Roos has scoffed at criticism of his team's ageing list and supposedly bleak future and pointedly described the praise heaped upon the 2008 performance of teams such as Carlton as "extraordinary".

And the minute it looks like the Swans are in for an extended period of trouble he'll pack up and retire, never to coach again. He's already laid the groundwork for that. He is the same Paul Roos who saw the writing on the wall at Fitzroy and [REDACTED] off on them, remember. Sure, it's tough in Sydney Paul. Nobody gives a shit but the AFL. But the AFL give you zones and salary-cap exemptions... so they're not such a bad friend to have, even if Big Bad Andy doesn't like the way you play. I like Roos, as a general rule, but his recent obsession with us is a tad worrying. |

Roos - "I don't think we could finish on the bottom three years in a row like Carlton did. Or was it four?" Hey Paul, it was TWO. Get your facts right or shut up. |

In a way - what he said is correct. With our list we should have made the finals. There were two key losses that I think were the difference between finals and not playing finals. The first round match vs Essendon*. It was the worst umpired match I had ever been to. And then the Adelaide match in Adelaide. We had our chances and some bizarre turnovers (such as the one where the umpire ran into Fev) sealed our fate in that match. The Sydney match was also close. Maybe that is why Roos showed so much joy in that match, as he probably knew that win for the Swans went a long way towards deciding finals placings. Team selection - more than ever - will be important in 2009. No more "untouchable" selections for certain players eg Russell, Wiggins etc and we should make the finals in 2009. But, yeah, even with all their concessions- what Sydney have done in the last 5 years is impressive. They have made mistakes, though, recruiting Everitt.... what the? That guy is slower than a snail. |

Its all relative though - anyone who doesn't think we have improved markedly from where we have been is a fool. |

Exactly. Looks like Roos is learning deflection from Malthouse. I was a masterful effort. Anyone who thinks we were capable of going from bottom 4 for a number of years to flag contention immediately is deluded. (although, that said, Sydney went from 14th in 95 to Grand finalists in 96, IIRC) If I was Ratts, I'd ring Roos and tell him to pull his flower head in. |

I could have sworn I heard Roos tip us for the wooden spoon before the start of the season. |

Geez Paul, was the interview about the faltering Swans or about Carlton? Lets just reflect that whilst we were being penalised into almost oblivion for cheating on the salary cap, your team was cheating the salary cap by the same amount - with full AFL approval. If it makes you feel better, beat up on us. Your time will come. |

Anyone who does not think we should have improved markedly is also a fool. Remove Geelong and Hawthorn from the top end and I don't see much difference between about 10 teams. Next years fortunes will depend on: Our run with injuries; How well drilled our team is in terms of its game plan and the oppositions (Coaching); Continued "natural" improvement of the list (we should be in the best position of the 10 teams for this); Fev's ability to cope with a game plan which means he will have less scoring opportunites and still wanting to do the team stuff; Finding other avenues to goal. Big year for Ratts. Good Luck. |

I don't think we should say anything about Roos. According to Blueman, he is coming to carlton in 2012 |

According to Blueman, he is coming to carlton in 2012 According to Blueman, there will be no Carlton in 2012 as the world would have exploded by then in a feiry ball of greenhouse gas. |

So now we can add Roos to the "get even" list, right next to Clarko. I'd expect us to pants those flowers next year and gee it'll be sweet ![]() ![]() |

Look, I live in Sydney and hate the swans with a passion that rivals my hatred for Collingwood. The truth is that despite Roos' motives for mentioning us, ie his team won't feature much longer in the finals, he is right in pointing out that mediocrity shouldn't be praised. We have improved out of sight this season. and deserve mention for that We won more games this season than we did the last few years and have started to improve our skills in areas we were just awful in previously, BUT we finished 11th Sure its not 16th and we were only a game and a half out of the eight, and you've got to start somewhere. I am very proud of our efforts this year but there is still much to do and if we don't continue to improve, we won't make the finals again next year. The swans haven't beaten a team in the eight this year so I would say that they are lucky to be there, so his critisism of us is rather deflective. I hope they bow out in straight sets. Here is to the blues, I hope they step up next year and show all critics that we are here to stay. DH |

I'm not 100% sure what he means by this quote... Quote: "Having said that, I do think sometimes the draft is overrated. I think some people see it as a panacea for winning premierships but I still haven't seen a team win one from the bottom."
But either way, I'm guessing he missed the three flags the Lions won. They were hardly a powerhouse team before they won their first flag. At times they may have been there or thereabouts, but look at the bulk of the Lions 2001 list and there were plenty of Bears players in there who had lived the nightmare before their dreams became reality. I reckon it's great that people are intimidated by us, even when we're not in the 8. ![]() They know Carlton is about to serve the comp a can of STFU! |

..bloody hell some of us are gettin' a might bit sensitive aren't we..??.. ..so Roos made an off-hand comment regarding certains teams, using the blues as an example of said teams.. ..it's not like Ratts has been keeping a tight reign on his opinions of other clubs/coaches.. |

Who's been saying Carlton has had an outstanding year? Sounds like Roos is just making shit up to cover up his own failings. |

I can understand Roos' point and it has nothing to do with Carlton. Every year Sydney is tipped to drop and every year we think that list has alot of C grade nobodies yet every year he gets them in to the finals. Thats brilliant coaching in my view. He overachieves regularly and gets no press down south, but of course he gets all the press in Sydney (and none of us in Melbourne or elsewhere cares about that). Compare that to Melbourne and none of us care about Sydney any more and the rising teams are interesting to us, particualrly to Carlton. We laugh at Richmond but 16th to 9th is a massive effort and good on them. Carlton's 15th to 11th looks like a smaller leap int hat sense but 6 more wins is pretty special and reflects a big mid tier of Clubs in 2008. Id suggest Roos shouldnt care about the Melbourne press as each state's press will track its own teams more than others. God knows now being based in Perth I laugh at every days 3 pages of Dockers crap in the West Australian. |
