Snippet in the Hun today said that Hooker and Motttram would be meeting the players before training today and that Motts would be taking the boys altitude training for pre-season work at Falls Creek. |

Sorry DUC - there's only one Motts where Carlton is concerned...the runner is 'Buster'. But all sounds good. I'm not convinced that anything will be achieved from altitude training at Falls Creek however. There's a reason Collingwood go to Arizona. It's a professional Altitude training camp that athletes from around the world go to. They do physiological testing and blood profiling to see how well the body is reacting to the altitude training. As part of Northern Arizona University - it's as professional as you can get. The staff there certainly helped Stephanie Rice in Beijing. There's a big difference between the two - not to mention about 600m altitude. |

Falls Creek doesn't really bring you much benefit in the way of altitude training (there's a little less oxygen up there, but the tracks are only 1300m - 1500m above sea level... but it's a great place to run and build camaraderie. I might go up there myself and 'accidentally' find myself running the same tracks as the boys... and 'co-incidentally' carrying a camera. |

There's a big difference between the two - not to mention about 600m altitude. I'm "guessing" that after having done that in Sth Africa last year, they may have a training regime to do which just involves the exercises rather than the assessment....so this would sound right.....BTW, they did do that in SthAfrica, but there was hardly a mention of it anywhere ![]() |

Can anyone tell me the benefits of altitude training? I always thought the benefit of training at altitude was to prepare your body with playing at altitude. Last time I checked football was not played at altitude. |

There's a big difference between the two - not to mention about 600m altitude. And Collingwood have won how many flags since they started going to Arizona? |

But football's not played on a beach either, Woof, and yet running up and down sand dunes has been a common feature of preseason training. The logic is that by training in harsher environments than the footy field, you end up increasing your maximum athletic performance more quickly. These are the claimed benefits of altitude training: Quote: Insufficient oxygen is the limiting factor in sports performance. We can combat this through altitude training. The benefits of altitude training are well documented and universally accepted, physiologically the following changes can occur:
* New red blood cell production * New blood capillary growth * Improved heart function * Micro-organism efficiency With these changes you could significantly improve your performance at all levels. Hypoxic Training is scientifically proven to: * Increase speed * Increase power * Improve VO2Max * Improve concentration span http://www.elite-performance.org/altitude-training.php But whether these benefits translate to increased performance back at sea level compared to comparable sea-level training is still controversial in athletics and swimming let alone a sport like footy. |

Look, to be honest you really need to train at altitude for an extended period of time (we're talking months) to get any genuine benefit that would be noticeable on the football field. What Collingwood does is more for team-bonding than anything else. It probably also has a placebo effect... if the players feel that they're receiving the very best training regime, they'll probably perform better. Doesn't hurt their 'brand' either: everyone thinks that Collingwood is all bleeding edge and professional when they trot off to Arizona for a week. Falls Creek will be great for the boys just because it's a great atmosphere, and almost other-worldly up there. When you run, it's like you've got a million hectares of landscape to yourself. Sound travels a long way, and the air is beautiful, crisp and clean. You just have to watch out for those little brown snakes that like to sun themselves on the tracks. Best not to run up the front if you can avoid it. |

The Falls Creek Altitude Training Centre never got off the ground as the board of management wanted the whole box and dice when that really wasn't feasible. They wanted it specifically for the Swim team. The cost of going to Arizona isn't as much as people think. Costs are brought down due to the programs affiliation with Northern Arizona University - Collingwoods biggest cost was the 100k it forked out for the 'oxygen tent' which is said to simulate being at 2000m, which by the way, is the mark at which high-altitude training is set. Falls Creek can only be labelled 'altitude' training. I take it also that any Mt.Buller sponsorship we once had has gone....wouldn't be a good look turning up to Falls Creek whilst still accepting the coin from Buller! How long are we going for? You need at least 21 days for proper altitude training to do any good. Anything less - and it's purely 'Bonding with Buster'. The club should sell this opportunity...lots of blokes like me who love to keep fit who'd fork out a couple of grand to run around the hills with Juddy and DUC's 'Smurph' |

I thought the two were one and the same? ![]() .... I do realise they are completely different mountains, but they seem to get along nicely when it comes to the ski season - your lift pass is good for both mountains. |

Nope - seperate locations, seperate entities, seperate board. |

The Grollo's own Mt Buller. But you can't really run up there. Falls Creek is on a huge Alpine plateau, with hundreds of kms of reasonably flat/undulating tracks. Buller's good for skiing and hurtling down the mountain on bikes. |
