As you know, Jimmy Bartel is gonna go close to back-to-back Brownlow Medals. Might have some competition from the likes of Ablett and Harvey, but he has backed up a brilliant 07' season with a stellar 08' season. Now............. Let's compare a few stats with our Marc Murphy. BARTEL 323 dissposals / 73 clearances / 85 inside50's / 19 goals MURPHY 321 Dissposals / 75 clearances / 116 inside 50's / 14 goals Now, i'm not saying that Murphy is gonna take out the Brownlow or anything, but the way he is developing is a credit to him, to Ratten, and the coaching staff. |

Yep, he just needs to pick the right option more often and hit his targets on a more consistent basis and he'll be a superstar. |

Once he gains the consistency, application and hardness of Dale Thomas he'll begin to get the recognition he deserves. ![]() |

I'm very happy with Murph's 2008, although I agree with HELLAS too. |

You could probably look up a player like Brent Stanton and he would have the same as Murph and Bartel but he is less effective |

http://www.pro-stats.com.au/psw/web/com ... d2=2006028 The thing that stands out for me, and I did a comparison between Bartel and Stevens as well, our guys aren't that far behind in terms of possessions, clearances etc but we're miles behind Bartel in tackles and 1%ers. |

And thats the difference to winning a premiership. I think our midfield is desperately needing a Sammy Mitchell or a Bartel type player for us to take the next step. |

Agree that Murph is developing well given that you're comparing the stats of a 24yr old who has played 129 games to a 21yr old who's played 56 games. I've included some other stats that add to the above. BARTEL 266 Handballs (Total Disposals 589), 121 marks (12 contested), 107 tackles, 73.54% disposal efficiency (DE). 1% 48 MURPHY 185 Handballs (Total Disposals 506), 130 marks, (1 contested) 56 tackles, 70.17% (DE). 1% 16 Overall I think Jimmy plays a more physical game. He invites the body contact and loves taking the spectacular mark backing into packs. He really thrives on the tough stuff. Given that he is a bigger unit than Murphy (187cm v 179cm & 86kgs v 75kgs) that's understandable. I guess if one thing stands out it's the difference in tackles which may suggest that Murph could work more on his defensive side of the game. Although if you compare his tackle stats to Thornton who has 16 you'd have to say Murph is a tackling machine! |

Nice - I wouldn't mind if he could - I put $20 on him @ $151 ![]() |

The point being, with time, experience and mental/physical maturity there's no reason why our current midfield shouldn't become known as the Famous Five... Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Stevens, Grigg. ![]() |

Our midfield lacks grunt and players like a Mitchell, Black, West and Kerr is what we are missing. Even a Brock Mclean who is hard at it, puts his head over it and takes the bumps and dishes them out. At the moment we play our best footy when its free flowing and loose. The kangas smashed us, the lions skipped away when they went man on man, the swans got over the line cause they made it a contest. We need a hard nut ball winner and then Juddy can really put the foot down and blow teams away. |
