I thin Fev pushed me into obscurity for second week - told ya we should trade him! BLISS! My son glanced across at me during the second quarter as we sat in the car – he’s game had just finished and the side two rungs below them had flogged them. He was sad. Then we heard the score, our beloved Blues 37 points down and the grey clouds hung lower than the belly of a pregnant cat. ‘Turn it off’ I said, not wanting a reminder of the pain of the past six years when this season, for a moment, had glittered so bright. ‘Nah’ he said, ‘this is the new Carlton, they’ll come back’. Ahh the hope of youth, the fountain we all long for once the bump that is forty is reached and then gets lost in the rear view mirror distance. We drove home in silence, the half time siren an opportune time to turn the radio off. I did not want to hear about Fev’s antics, the mistakes, the lack of hit outs, the playing wide, the missed passes. I have heard those commentaries far too often in the past. We arrived home from that belting and just beating the pelting rain. I went in search for a cop of tea and my son turned on the tellie. ‘Dad it’s only 25 points’ he called and drew me in to the lounge room. We sat together on the couch, the young and the old, linked not just by our genes but also by the love of that jumper. And it happened. The boys lifted a gear and then lifted again. By three quarter time it was 11 points and he and I sat on the couch smiles bigger than the Cheshire’s cats. We knew. Both of us, fundamentally, in our bones, the marrow sweet as mum’s tomato soup, we knew we would win. ‘Fev’ll kick a couple,' said my son during the last break. 'Judd’ll murder ‘em out of the middle’ I replied. And Gibbs’ said my son, proving he, at least, reads the occasional Ghost article. ‘And Gibbs’ I agreed. Then we sat and waited, our chests fit to burst. His young heart and my old thumper beating together, matching, in spectator unison, matching those hearts at the Dome, all the Bluebagger hearts beating wild with the joy and knowledge the 2008 steamroll was on again. And so it came to pass. The Bluebaggers went ballistic in the last! We whooped and hollered and threw the cushions around the room and the lads went berserk, rampaging across the turf of the Dome, making it their home, making it the Doggies fearful burial ground. We were the new dogs digging up the bulldog bones of the past and showing that club, that this great club is far nearer the mark than many thought possible. That’s the thing about Ratts, sure he’s scored Judd and Stevo’s back and Gibbs and Murph will only get better, but Ratts, Ratts gave us back our heart! He emptied out the cold despair of the past few years and refilled it with the blueblood of yesteryear. These boys know how to fight, how to look across the lines, dig deep and turn it up a notch. We, my Bluebagger friends, are well and truly back! Ratts has given us that! So my son and I screamed ‘Eddie!’ after that marvellous, grass-rolling pass from Simmo. ‘Stevo!’ with the lace out that painted itself across Fev’s chest, and ‘Fev!’ of course, always in the last as we storm it’s a loud, bright ‘Fev!’ And added to that the long, goose like honk of ‘Kruise!’ and the glorious, almost unbelievable cry of ‘Judd!’ How is it that he is now ours! I still must some days pinch myself over that one. We rocked the couch, burnt the walls of the lounge room with our bright joy, merged with all the other Bluebaggers at home and at the Dome, listening in on radio or watching at the pub, a chorus of joy, a song of Bliss. We are back, it has been dark, it has filled us with dismay, we have borne the brunt of jokes and wooden spoons waved like poppies in the field of France, and we are back! The doggies are a top two side and we belted them! We are back, drag out the old duffel coats, fling the scarves around the necks, forget the paunches and pull on the beloved jumpers, we are back! When the siren sounded my son and I stared at each other and in unison gave forth with a loud ‘da dada dada’. We sang as if perched on the seats at the ground, we sang the light that was in our hearts out into the open. We sang it once, we sang it twice and then we sang it again! It was a grand old win, an ‘oppry win, full of whoops and flights of fancy and a flood of Bluebagger players running the lines, it was the Texas Rangers, the here comes the cavalry, the jump out of the trenches, blue water across the rocks and boulders, it was us, returning, coming back again to that powerhouse I’ve known and loved! Sure we may not make the finals this year, it is certainly a hard run, though if we beat the Crows this week, it becomes closer to happening. Sure though, we may not make it this year but who, who out there looking in to their Bluebagger hearts, doesn’t doubt it will happen next year? And so this week we travel to that state of churches and football clubs lurching. They have given us hell for a time now but we are coming over there to show again those lost in the misery of the South’s lost pretences, that we are back. Fev loves that ground so I’ll mark him down for 5. Wiggler for 3 (oh you little beauty chief, you little ripper, it was a 100 gamer to make the greatest champion proud). Harts to crack it this week for 3 also JR to have a ripper. And Judd, Judd for 3 more votes and maybe that Brownlow may not be headed to Geelong after all. Win over there and the bliss will continue to shine for another week. Lit by the photos and pages in the paper dedicated to another great win. Go Blues! |

![]() ![]() Ditto Good stuff DB...can't believe you didn't believe till your son turned on the TV...how could you miss watching that beautiful and bold jumper; win or lose? And....I can't see why your lack of your belief that we may make the finals this year would be the way our kids would be thinking looking forward...you know, the ones who never say die...our new found heart....the ones who turn the tables on everyone. They believe in their ability all right! We should believe with them! You're probably got it all plotted out for the next 5 weeks; that'll be in next week's "Ghost' article when we flog the Crows interstate. |
