Thinking of Judd, & how Shirley will probably tag him again, & other times Juddy has been tagged because he is such a damaging player & there are others like Ablett, Goodes & so on, also being tagged by opposition players, on instruction from the coach, to effectively nullify that player.

Who was the first player tagged? When was it?

Was it Jezza? or Leigh Matthews? or Barassi? Before them?

Can't have been that long ago, can it? I mean football was never about worrying about opposition players to that extent until..................

Well, I don't know about who might be the first player tagged, but certainly Barassi was famously tagged in the 1958 Grand Final by "Hooker" Harrison which was considered a key ploy in Collingwood's surprise victory.

IIRC Sheedy used to use Shane Heard as a tagger on Greg Williams in the late 80s...

Yeah, was prettyr sure Diesel used to get tagged quite alot & I'm pretty sure Hawthorn used Michael Tuck to tag Braddles in the 87 GF, not really to much effect iirc or he went off him early or something.

Was really wondering how far back these tactics go thats all.

Earliest we have so far is ianh's 1958.

Tuck learned pretty quickly that tagging is dangerous in the 87 gf thanks to a W Johnston elbow :lol:

Sean Denham was the worst, lowest, filthiest, sniping prick of a tagger I have seen.
