He played a terrific game on James Hird in 2003; but then badly injured his shin.....fought back into the side, only to break his collarbone.

He managed about 50 games.

that was probably only one game when Hird was just back from injury.......the guy was on the list at least 2 seasons too many

So it was more to do with injury or his ability?

Is that you Trent? :)

I always imagined Thornton and Sporn as our replacement Silvagni/McKay backmen... obviously not as talented but you get the picture.

Sadly it wasn't to be. Sporn did have some potential in my opinion, but his frame was never going to make it in an AFL backline.

I honestly thought he could play Trent Sporn, and under a different regime, would have blossomed as an AFL player.

Oh man.... oh damn that was funny.

Is Trent Sporn trying to crack a "I have come to cleen zee pool" joke in his facebook picture?!

Intentional of not - that is TOO funny.

Rachael was the only decent sporting Sporn.....Kerian and Trent were duds and Trents recruiting still mystifies me......he was going to grow into a CHB according to the recruiting dept?

Did it mystify you at the time? I reckon the "grow into" BS is urban legend. After something like only his second or third game (against the Swans) he secured a NRS nomination. He seemed a prospect as a midfielder at the time.

I agree and I wish we had persisted, given some of the players we retained in preference. Not being a gun doesn't mean you can't carve out a role as a handy player.

At least he had a good last game for the club....

The timing for that crop of draftees was awful. they came to a club unable to break into a strong lineup, and unable to get much exposure. Then within the space of a season or two all leaders had left, the club had no draft picks, nothing to trade, and all recruits were thrown heavily into the deep end.

You'd like to see how some of these guys would have gone in a side that had some ability, a coach that was prepared to give them game time (not 45mins off the bench) and time to develop.

Not to be.

Shows really just how well wiggins has done to knock out 100 games.

The one that surprised me was blake campbell. I remember when he and thornton debuted thinking he was going to be a great find.

Sporn, wiggins and Livo were our first crack at loading up in the first round.

Perhaps we didn't pick right. Perhaps they'd have developed better under a different structure of leadership and coaching.

Either way we'll never know.

I remember thinking the same thing. I thought Blake would be a gun, moved well and used it well. Left footers are always handy and he had good hands.

Had terrible troubles with injury from memory and might have been an early casualty in the Pagan era.

Yep.....they talk of rotations today......under Denis Pagan it was one game to show your wares then disappear until a glut of injuries got you another gig.
