Jordan Bannister is going in for surgery and according to the club probably won't play again this year. Now I'm not sure of the exact rules on players being put on the LTI list and thought that this may be an opportunity for the club to promote one of our rookies.

I initially thought of Jacobs but Joseph may also be another who could be given a chance to see if he can make it in the AFL.

So my question to all of you is can Bannister now be placed on the LTI list or has the cut off date passed?

Jordan Bannister underwent surgery on Wednesday to remove a cyst from behind his knee and to repair a damaged hamstring tendon. The injury has kept him out of action since Carlton’s round five victory over Melbourne and despite a return to playing seemingly close at various times he has been unable to make a full recovery and it was decided to undergo surgery.

It is unlikely that he will play again this season however an update on his rehabilitation will be made in two weeks time.

If we weren't half a crack at the finals - I'd say definitely.

So, Bad luck.

Isn't LTI measured as a minimum of 8 weeks?

Any medical people here who can give us a rough prognosis?

I'm sure we could put him down for 8 weeks...we have the technology and there's no need for brown paper bags in this instance.

All Banno would need is a note from his parents.

Not exactly sure sorry, I did see that Port elevated a rookie to replace Burton which must have been very recently, so maybe its a goer.

I never knew that there was a date at which you could no longer place someone onto the long-term injury list. However I have already expressed this idea recently in another thread, so if Bano is out for the rest of the season then without a doubt promote Jacobs and play him out for the rest of the season (if there aren't any other underlying rules that say we cannot.) then decide if we still want him at the end of the season.

From memory, there is a cut-off for promotions to fill the spot of someone transferred to the LTI list. IIRC, it's Rd 18. Don't shoot me if I've got that wrong. If I'm right, then we have a perfect right to transfer Banno to the LTI and promote a rookie. But that's on the assumption that Banno will fit the criteria. The AFL's Medical Officer will have to rule that he's unlikely to be able to play AFL or VFL footy for 8 weeks. No credit is given for the fact he has missed the year to date - the 8 weeks have to be from now on. Some surgery doesn't involve 8 weeks lay-off. Removal of a cyst wouldn't involve anywhere near as much recovery time as a knee op for instance. Any medical people here who can give us a rough prognosis?

The last AFL injury list said Bannister - season. so the question remiains . Is it worth putting him on the LTI and promtoing one of the rookies say Jacobs so we can see how they go before the end of the season?

It's pretty uncomfortable - but it generally is a 4 week layoff - but depending on the damage to the hammy - it will probably be closer to 6. A baker's cyst (or baker's knee) is what it's called.

As I noted above, the magical threshold is 8 weeks. But it doesn't matter what the club doctors say about the recovery period - it's the AFL Medical Officer's opinion that counts. As DrSherrin says, the injury might not be serious enough to qualify. The cut-off for players to be promoted to fill in for players transferred to the LTI list has now passed. But it's conceivable that Jacobs has already been promoted but the club hasn't announced it. Carlton has a tradition of not publicising such a development until the player is named in the team, at least as an emergency.
