Great article in the age on Juddy:

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/m ... 42382.html

Quote:
At the end of the game, Judd was ranked No. 1 for disposals (30), contested possessions (15), clearances (9) and, with four tackles, was ranked sixth. No other player had such a devastating effect on the game as Judd did at the start of the last quarter. So I was absolutely shocked when, on Saturday morning, The Age and the Herald Sun could not fit him into the best five players on the ground. Do we judge our champions too harshly?

I was just as shocked that no carlton player got in the Huns top 5 players and Gibbsy was #5 in the Age.

We need to give Juddy more protection.....

The media would be all over him like a rash were we winning games, but as such, individual efforts in losing teams don't seem to go as noticed by the media.

One of the best articles I have read in ages. All hail Chris Judd

It's funny, but Judd is a totally different player in Navy Blue than he ever was over in west coast.............and i actually appreciate him more now than what i did before.

At West Coast i always thought he was too relaiant on getting the ball from the likes of Cox and then getting assistance from 2-3 other players who looked as if they were there JUST to sheppard him and create space. I never really saw him as a 'contested' ball winner.

But with Carlton, he has completly changed similar to what Kouta did after doing his knee.

If he never gets back his bursts of speed like what he had 2005-2007 it honestly wouldn't bother me all that much because i appreciate him more now that i ever have.

And yeah, Walls is right. Some of the players who earnt points the other night got most of their possesions 'un-contested'. Judd was brilliant..........as was Gibbs.............one, if not, both should have been amongst the votes.

A saints fan that I work with commented after the game that every cent we pay Judd is worth it.

Judd could have even more impact and longevity if his team mates are taught and willing to assist him more with blocks and running support.

that is a quality piece of journalism.

his last line sums it up really.

Judd really does have no peer in this game and fans of other clubs are afraid to admit it.

it will become all too obvious of his worth in a few years time when we are winning flags.

ablett is brilliant but Judd is better.

Very very insightful, Budzy. His teammates just need to be taught. My guess is that the likes of Bentick, Hadley, Carrots, etc would be very willing.

(Stevo I'm not that sure about, and Murph, Gibbs, and Walks shouldn't be in this category)

I'd actually love us to go after Sumich as an assistant, so that he could bring his expertise to this very area, which to me is one of our two most critical issues (the other being a premiership forward line structure and setup).

You guys make it sound as if Ratts, Braddles, Williams and Montgomery haven't thought of this plan.

When you have so many things that need attending to in a team framework you have to progressively work through them all. They will get there. Don't think it isn't being discussed and worked on. It's hard to block for Judd when we don't win many of the tapouts.

At WC the blocking could go on because most of the time Cox knew how to put the ball infront of Judd so he could run to an area with confidence. The others knew how to clear the path because they were all on the same page, but that took many seasons as a group to get right.

You can't go from 0 to 100 overnight.

This article from just under a month ago suggests Judd's ability to win contested possession is the same as when he was at West Coast:

The Judd of 2008 wins identical levels of contested possession as he did when at the Eagles. It proves Judd was, and still is, a hard-ball magnet

So why then, man, don't we play Hampson to teach him and let he and Judd work together. Practicing at training is all well and good, but gametime is what Hammer needs.

He was dropped after the Collingwood game for what I'd consider novice mistakes. He's a big body that can halve a contest better than Cloke when the game gets on.

Great article, but thanks Wallsy, Kirk is sure to keep him to a single digit possession tally now.

One thing I've learnt over the last decade at Carlton is to never, EVER, take anything for granted, no matter who’s in charge.

The abilities of a lot of senior managerial types in all walks of professional life is often overrated.

While he's a big improvement on the former 'master coach', Ratten is by no means a proven performer in his current role, YET.

If we keep getting belted in the ruck using Cloke and Kreuze and we keep going in with Cloke and Kreuze we will keep getting belted in the ruck.....

Id like to see a mixing up and some trialing of others through there... one bloke is being played in the reserves of the reserves and pre season people were talking about him getting games in the ruck and part of a trio of future ruckmen guns........

Then there is Jacobs...

Either way Judd dominated games Cox or no Cox... Gardiner or no Gardiner....because those around him worked for him.. cos Judd isa a superstar!!!!!.... and he knows the game...!!!

DN thanks for that.

I remember first seeing Judd in his senior debut prior to the RD2 H&A game in a 1st rd Wizard Cup of that 2002 year. WCE played Carlton at Optus Oval and he showed fantastic skill, poise, balance, evasion skills etc ripping it up & down the wings & flanks that he had me glued to the TV and thinking "where the hell did he come from" & "haven't the WCE picked up a good one."

Good luck to him and CFC and may he have many happy & successful years together.
