Post subject:  Handball Technique

I know our foot skills need a lot of work, but what about our handball technique? JR and PB seem to have different techniques than most, both boys appear to loop the handball rather than penetrate. Anyone who has been to training might be able to explain what we teach?

I believe that Handballing as a skill has not improved in 20 years. Ratts and Teaguey are great with the instruction...the latter really good at training with the young blokes. Ratts, Diesel and Braddles would still be ranked in the top 5 at the club for handball technique. Young Browne and Army can fire them out...as can Hadley and Judd...but it seems to be a skill which a lot of younger guys coming through seem to lack - the ability to shoot a handball out with a bit of force behind it.

Maybe we underestimate the complexity of handballing as a skinny kid who is quite fatigued....

As they get bigger and stronger the penetration will come.....Some have it naturally, but the rest have to work hard on it.

A couple of times last weekend I saw a few players (can't remember who) pump out 20-25 metre handpasses to players on the break.

One from the HBF to the wing created a goal.

Anyone remember?!

Kreuzer's penetration with handball is fantastic. One against Collingwood was brilliant on the south-west half-back-flank of the G.

Gibbins sends the ball into the Flinders St train yards when he handpasses.

...hang on, Gibbins once handballed the footy straight clean through a teammates chest.

No, no wait - I got it.

Gibbins doesn't handball. He just stares the ball down and it automatically does whatever he wants it do it...

:)

The passage of play last week with the long handballs included Carrots, AB with GIBBINS on the receiving end.
