Post subject:  Can we get rid of our pokies

Was just reading this article, http://www.theage.com.au/national/pratt ... -2un4.html, and the thought struck me, why do we have to profit from pokies?

Surely we now have sufficient revenue streams coming into the club.

Pokies ruin people's lives. They tear families apart, cause relationship stresses, financial ruin, depression. They feed on the vulnerabilities of people. We are basically taking money from people without giving something in return, period. This whole crap about clubs cheating salary cap, tanking etc, is crap, every club does it and at the end of the day even if it occurs this does not ruin peoples' lives. But pokies do. I would love to see us take the moral high ground and abandon profiting from pokies.

Agree.

Souths up here in Sydney is in the process of ridding itself of pokies.

Pokies prey on the people least able to afford the losses.

I'd like to hear about some of the alternative revenue streams we have kickin' at the club... it'd be great to shaft the pokies.

Pokies are the cancer of society. I wasted at least 5 years of my life playing that crap, lost friends, money and pretty much my whole life went pear shaped. I was lucky enough to finally see the light but many never do. People who don't know much about them fail to see what a devastating effect they have on the community.

I don't care if we lose money, ditch them anyway.

Do you think that alcohol is bad and ruins peoples lives if not handled carefully?
Do you think driving a car too fast is dangerous and can ruin peoples lives?
Should guns be banned because people get shot by people holding them?

Someone mentioned Souths in Sydney have removed pokies, one would think thats pretty noble and moral.
Why then does the club still receive millions of dollars of grants from the souths juniors? souths juniors is a massive pokie venue.
Why have they left the door open to getting the licence back.
Huge Publicity stunt thats why.

I work in a club in QLD we have 100 pokies, QLD office of Gaming Regulation has just finished a public survey where problem gambling has reduced by around 2% in 2008 from 2003. There are 98.55% of the population that dont have a problem with pokies.

Clubs also pour millions and millions of dollars in to the communities supporting junior sports, schools, and various community groups.
Who is going to pick up the tab for that when the Govt succeed and kill off the clubs?

Flowering mass hysteria.
Pokies are a legitimate profit area, if managed properly are an integral part of a licensed business.

It's not the same thing, people who are struggling are tempted to gamble because they think they will eventually win just like the lotto, but lose 95% of the time and it causes a mess.

I reckon it's poor form having them more then drinking,at least the drinker who is drinking to his crappy life may enjoy a drink but not lose his weeks pay and be in debt to lots of Thousands because he reckon this time he will win.

People who are all for it,care how much revenue they get from it. It probably doesn't effect someone who has several games playing it if they earning big dollars and has 3 houses.

I see no problems with Carlton keeping the Pokies as long they don’t advertise them and encourage people to play them, besides other Clubs have them and we don’t want to fall behind the other Clubs do we and as I see it if people don’t come to play Pokies at Carlton they will play them at other venues so what is the problem.
