I am not sure if it was SEN or another station that a caller said Carlton was tanking again. I do not accept that but the comments about how fit Carlton are does ring a bell. I always thought that Pagan {if he was tanking] kept the players less than maximum fitness and they ran out of steam during the game. Their tackling was wishy washy, and still is , they do not have anyone lurking in the goals for a hand pass or just to crumb , I hate their down the wings possession approach and this tempo football----get me a real coach I accept a finals place is beyond this list. I hate to see unfit players give it away, so easy. |

I think up until last night we were genuinely in with a chance of making the finals but that ship has all but sailed now and I reckon we'll see more and more players being "rested" like Kruizer. My money is on Judd having a break sometime soon - within a fortnight at a guess. Murph and Gibbs will be on that list too. Rich |

Rich Rest Judd NOW....... give him this weekend off and the midseason break. He'll be good to go in the business end. Just think.......... from rounds 12-22 we will have a rested Judd, Welcome Walker back from injury, ditto Jamison,........... finals are still a posibility. |

I still think that we can make the eight but what I just cant understand is why drop Pfeiffer and Edwards from the team, it just didn’t make any sense to me, even if we played Saddington alright he may be a bit slow and he may be on his last leg, but for the sake of a bit of experience especially with all the injuries that we have in our backline I think we could have done with him against Geelong even if he was picked on the bench. Also please excuse my grammar as I came to this Country when I was thirteen and a half years old back in 1951 and I left school back in Malta at the age of thirteen and although I knew what a cat table etc was I still could not speak or understand English and in them days most kids started work at the age fourteen, so all in all I think that I’m not doing too bad after all, I just try my best. |

bluekettle, There is nothing wrong with your grammar. I'm 57, was born here, and can only speak one language and still have trouble with my spelling. |

Correct me if I'nm wrong but I think the mid season break isn't until after the Richmond (or Essendon*?) game in round 14. Regardless I would rest Judd this week so he will be fresh for the upcoming big three games at the MCG against Collingwood, Essendon* and Richmond. |

We are top eight material - we have the players to make it. We are restricted by injuries at the moment. I am one of the most optimistic supporters around, but agree we are not ready for finals. To make it, we MUST have the same desperation and intensity for the footy as the top sides. We MUST apply relentless pressure on the opposition, and always be there in support of teammates. The boys have the ability to do it, but need to harden up mentally and believe in themselves. The players that won't run at full pelt, tackle ferociously, dive without fear into the pack to get the ball, block and play like their lives depended on it are the problem. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of dropping those not playing with the required attitude, as no viable alternatives apparent in the Ants. The coaching staff needs to fire the slackers up. Sure, other teams have bigger muscles than ours, and more experience, but I reckon the bigger issue stopping us from being competitive lies between the ears. |

Seriously mate you got to be joking if you think we are any good to make the finals. The last thing we want is to scrape into the eight then get smashed in a first final Let's take our time and get it right and not be pretenders. Some of you seem to think we are world beaters as stages |

Besides the Pies game when have we played like that?? We are top eight material - we have the players to make it. We are restricted by injuries at the moment. We got out of jail against Freo and the Brisbane Lions smacked us. Who ever won in the game against the Lions was going to play finals. They smashed us. We are not top eight material. We are slowly getting there and are definitely on the way up but far from it this year. The last thing we all want is to make the eight and get smashed in our first final cause honestly thats what would happen. We hate contested footy, when its tight and tough and come September when you have to play that style of footy we will be shown out. Smaller bodies, poor skills especially under pressure and man on man hard contested football not the basket keepings of style we are playing right now. |

Some of you seem to think we are world beaters as stages I don't think that was Sparky's point. No top 8 teams are made up of finals contenders. There are teams that are making up the numbers. I have no qualms about making the 8 and then losing in the first week of finals. Finals is what every team strives for and the experience of playing in a final, losing or otherwise, is where we should be aiming. Do you think getting smashed in a Final is going to stunt out growth? Seriously you have to be joking, if you think that. |

I don't think Top 8 side means what it used to mean as there are teams that are just making up the numbers. There is top 4 and then the rest. Right now the top 8 is looking formidable, but at seasons end, that will change. |

Maybe i'm being more realistic than some or it could be the pessimistic side of me but thats how i think and its what i think. We are not a top eight side and in time we will get there maybe 2 years when our young bodies develop. |

We'll win 2 or 3 more games for the year (Melb, Ess, ?Rich). We're gonna miss out on Natinui by 2 or 3 wins. Oh well. We can't go on tanking forever. |

..to be a real finals side, yer gotta be good at both contested and uncontested footy. ..the top 8 is really top4, and another 4 to be smacked about come september.. ..this year it might actually be top6 with 2 fakies thrown in.. ..as for Melvey's point of us hating contested footy, some of our players enjoy it but generally we're too young/weak a side to actually play true contested footy.. ..that's why we have to play more of an uncontested style.. ..we just can't match it with the big bodies in tight pack situations.. ..our tackling will never be as fierce/intense, and we won't hurt them in tackles anywhere near as much as they hurt us.. ..our relentless pressure beat the pies, and the pies relentless pressure beat the cats.. ..but not cos of the actual intensity itself, but more from the perspective of spooking the opposition.. ..pressured them mentally, cos couldn't physically/talent wise match them on field.. |

The top 8 is 50% of the competition and as such you don't have to be an awesome team to finish 7th or 8th. |

I don't think we're tanking. I do think we could scrape into the 8, although we most probably won't. If we do, and get smashed, it won't make a lick of difference to our long term prospects. If anything, it will aid our development and boost our kids confidence to have made it into September in the first place. It's been way too long since we have played finals. We've bottomed out, now is the time to play every game to win and cop the bad results on the chin and make sure we learn from that. ![]() |
