Carlton, Bollywood bond at The Dome

Quote:
A group of 50 international students, predominantly of Indian background, savored their first experience of Australian Rules football at the weekend, as guests of the Carlton Football Club for Saturday’s thrilling match with Fremantle at The Dome.

The first and second-year students from Melbourne’s Australian National Institute of Business and Technology took their places alongside members of the Carlton cheersquad at the Lockett end of the venue, and were promptly swept up in the excitement as the Blues overhauled the Dockers in a stirring final quarter fightback.

Great story. I can just imagine them seeing the excitement when Pfief kicked that goal. Great game for them to see

The International students are here to work also. something like 80% end up getting residency. Its a good market to tap into. They can be as sports mad as the rest of us. Also they tend to stick together, so 1 Carlton fan could bring 3 or 4 with him

agree Buzzaaah. no better way for the international students to feel part of Australia than to belong to the greatest club around.

Just to give you guys an idea, I know a couple of international students who used to barrack for Melbourne and have switched to Carlton b/c of Judd. So, they in generally pick a team for no apparent reason but once you give them a reason to follow a team, they will jump on board. So the international day organized by CFC is a great way to get these guys on board b/c there is now a reason to follow Carlton!

Using the family re-union visa perhaps?

great to hear...I worked at MelbUni for a few years as an international student adviser and would take groups of 20-30 students to the footy a couple of times each year (between 2005-2007) and on numerous occasions contacted Carlton via phone, letter, emails...over and over again... asking for any kind of involvment from the club...even just a couple of sausages or something!!! Never got a reply the first time, and was told flat out no on another occasion, they eventually said I could use the BBQ's at royal park if I brought the sausages... what a difference a few years make eh? But did successfully manage to indoctrinate a few of them!! =) really annoyed me at the time tho cause I thought it was a good idea but no dice, and I was really hoping to use it as an opportunity to meet a few players!!

Post subject:  Another visit?

Just had a ride with a taxi driver who claimed that there will be a much larger group of students at the St Kilda game on July 11th. He also claimed that some students are now going every week now to the Carlton games.
