I think anyone leaving Walsh out of best 22 calculations doesn't fully realise what we have.

Agree Sam's an absolute jet he'll have due respect very early in the season.

Thomas out for me, makes too many bad decisions with ball in hand. Not much of an impact considering he was playing the easiest role in modern football a lot of the time.
No way known should he be best 22, not even best 25. They need leaders at Northern and that's where he should spend his time now, use only in emergency.

Might be a little harsh.
He is great around the kids.
He was getting smashed on the backline, the way the ball was continuously rolling in, hence some of the poor decision making.
At least he shows some mongrel that we have sorely lacked for a long time.

Definitely Thomas in. His leadership and experience will be more valuable than ever this year, and he’s playing his best footy since he’s been at the club.

Also, Fasolo has far more runs on the board as a small forward than anyone on our list. He will play if fit.

Don’t think we should be playing both of Walsh and Stocker straight away when we already have Dow, O’Brien, SPS, Fisher, Setterfield finding still finding their feet. Get some bigger bodies around them. I reckon we should stagger the debuts of Walsh and Stocker unless their preseason form is so good they pick themselves

I don't mind if players pass on Thomas, but atm he along with the leadership group steer our young team.
Fasolo too.

There's a reason why Walsh went No 1 in a deep draft, and LOB went 10 in 2017.
Walsh has shown to all he's the real deal. Dependable. Leadership.
Can deliver and will deliver game in game out.
Our leadership group say he's "special", and makes things happen.

Walsh sounds ready.

Stocker would have played first round in the last few years, and I doubt this year.
You never know. He's following Angus Brayshaw's training routine, so me thinks he'd be prime to play by round 1 2019.

I was expecting smithy to stay true and have Thomas make way for the classy kids.

For now Thomas in for reasons explained.

I agree 100% he was getting smashed in the backline, edit, diminshed backline.
As much as players said they were stickin phat last year, I could see they had lost their endeavour.
At times it looked like they had nothing much to play for. I don't blame the coach, because everyone has stuck phat.

Thomas , Newman and Docherty will be formidable in our refreshed backline, creating some attacking offensive pressure and drive, give Kade some forward time too or just let run around and enjoy his footy.

I agree with Walsh in for round 1. I think Stocker will take some time to develop his tank.

Based on the various training reports so far, something like this for round one:

B: Weitering Jones Newman
HB: Garlett Marchbank Simpson
C: Curnow Cripps Walsh
HF: Fisher Curnow Murphy
F: McGovern McKay Fasolo
R: Kreuzer Kennedy Dow
IC: SPS Thomas Setterfield Plowman
Emerg: Bugg O'Brien Williamson

Yup spot on I'd swap Setterfield with Bugg as the younster may not be ready to go by Rd 1.

Which training reports would have Garlett playing half back ahead of Williamson?
Garlett could hardly get a game last year when we had heaps of injuries, let alone off half back. Williamson every day in the position before the flighty half committed Garlett.

Replace Garlett with either Williamson, O'Brien, Cunningham or Silvagni. Otherwise I like this side.

Aside from joker and whipping boy, I'm not sure Thomas should be in our 22.

We didn't sign him up to play VFL. It's up to Cunningham, Garlett, Lang and other fringe types to force Daisy out of the 22. Pickett and Docherty are already out of action for next season. Newman will replace Sam. Dow, Walsh, Fisher and SPS will be locks. Kennedy plays a different position and role, but is a wildcard and the type we need in the midfield. The sight of Cunningham and Williamson on the track is a plus. Reckon Thomas will hold his spot, but these two could force him out if they're fit and can step up. Setterfield will be treated with kid gloves due to injury. O'Brien could take Dale's spot, but he won't go down without a fight.

We won’t win many games with Thomas playing, so look for his exclusions as indicators.
