Do you think Docherty will/should spend much time onball next year?

Hopefully so, unless the MC choose to ease him back in. I thought he was a certainty to make the transition this year.
I'd suggest his football IQ will increase significantly from his year on the sidelines. He has courage, smarts and good hands. Hopefully he can translate those skills to a midfield role.

Only Carlton would take an All Australian h/b and play him in another role, coming off a knee as well. Crazy talk. Leave him to play his best position which he is most suited too.

He already played parts in the midfield last year and showed promise there.

The Prospectus said

"Docherty added another string to his bow and was used at centre bounces, recording the third-best centre bounce attendance differential of the top 10 attendees at Carlton"

Given the lack of depth in the Carlton midfield it would be crazy to not consider it.

Robbing Peter to pay Paul. He was the best halfback in the league last year, that's what the Champion data numbers tell us; and they write the Prospectus.
Leave him where he excels.

I'd leave Docherty as a rebounding half back for a while. Maybe the midfield in 2020.

Docherty into the midfield.
We have enough HBF's; don't we?

I'd be inclined to start Doc at HB just to gwet back into the groove, from there it is a matter of where we have the greater need. I suspect if Simpson plays on and we have a reasonable run with injuries to defenders we will move Doc to midfield, from there it is a matter of how he goes but I would expect him to be very useful in there and best used in that role even though those that cover for him down back would not be expected to reach his level.

Id have Marchbank, Jones, fight it out for one spot. Plow and Byrne too. Prefer the backline to be more mobile.

Marchbank is easily in our best 22 IMO. He won't be "fighting" for a spot with anyone if he's fit.

I agree. So Jones out... unless he is in better form. Then Marchbank can have a crack at Weiterings spot... or add some dash and take Williamsons or Byrn spot.

My aim would be to have a more mobile backline. Try to get away with playing as little lumbery/tall players as possible across the 22.
Base the gameplan around pressure and being impossible to play against. Score on the counter.
