Post subject:  Fisher - Could he be better than Fev?

Just a thought from left field which I'm warming to - the post assumes that we lose Fev to another club and fisher is required to take on the key forward role.

Assuming over a period 3-5 years and no injuries to either player and if we continue to play the pagan game plan. Fisher is a couple years younger I think though is coming back from a knee (he seems to be unaffected from training reports though).

Height - Fisher is 191cm (has he grown?), Fev is 191 (from memory thats his latest measurement
weight - Fev has the advantage here but there shouldnt be a reason why Fisher cant bulk up
Speed - not too sure about Fisher's mobility but I dont think its that bad - Fev is better on the lead though
Marking - Fisher in a pack, perhaps Fev on a lead (never really seen Fisher in that role)
Kicking - Fev easily I think - though I dont think Fisher is that bad in that area (goals/behinds kicked?)
Ground level agility - Fev is good when he wants to, havent seen enough of fisher to comment
Mental state - Fisher easily - Fev has some question marks here
Trade value - Fev easily - might be interesting to look at prospective trades for either player and hypothesis on how it might affect team structure. Its not really a factor in assessing player worth though

Although its largely a theoretical exercise (I'd like to think Fev would stay) - I actually think Fisher could provide a very good replacement - Long term perhaps he could become a mini gehrig without the off-field issues (once he bulks up) - I think Fisher's marking ability is more suited to the pagan game plan as well (bomb it long to a one on one contest).

Any thoughts on this? - Perhaps Jarusa could come up with a few comparisons of their careers to date.

when i see fish, i dont see a mini gehrig. fish just doesnt have that body shape. sure he will bulk, but his frame just aint built that way.

when i think of fish i think of a more streamlined, athletic, jack in the box type of forward.

i think fish would play differently as a full foward, and would want the ball kicked to him one on one where his over head contesed mark is a streangth, rather than making some big leads into space.

fish is a better option to leave in the square and just bang away to IMO.
will be great if he continues to bulk up

gehrig used to be very skinny actually :)

gehrig seems to have a bigger frame to me though. i'm not talking about muscle either. plugger had a big frame, but lloyd doesnt.

fisher is more like lloyd body shape i reckon.

I think Fisher could make it as a Full forward...great hands and is a smart player....doesnt have Fevs finishing skills though...

Is this thread largely theoretical?

Fish reminds me of a Matt Clape/Richard Dennis type half forward & will be very dangerous as the third option. Don't think he could replace or play the same role expected of Fev though.

Seem to remember that his kicking wasn't flash before the knee, so I don't expect it to improve.

his kicking seems fine (although a little awrkward looking) before he had his first knee injury.

then wehn he came back he seemed to have the yips.

Fish was a good kick until his first injury (medial) - then his kicking was less accurate after that.

Fish would be a great player to play one-out in the square. The day he won his NRS nomination he played one-out in the square a couple of times taking very strong marks.

Very good in the contested situation, sticks his arms out Royce Hart style and they stick (NB. I'm NOT saying he's as good as Hart was). Good on the lead, not quite as quick as Fev. But he's not slow, he's quite mobile.

Let's wait and see how the Fish recovers from his injuries before trying to make him the focal point for our attack. Many players struggle for a while when returning from these injuries. Luckily our current players are already anticipating Fischer's return by kicking over the heads of our forwards at the moment, so game plan and skills won't need to change that much.

He just needs to be able to kick them like Fev to be better than him, he beats him in other areas.

Unfortunately he never will kick quite like Fev, but even so he'll be very good

absolutely - Most would prefer Fev to stay.

Would love to see more discussion though :)

I think you have answered yourself......

on most attributes Fevola has won out, except on important defining criteria....mental state.

so, on which do we place most importance. For mine mental state.

having said that we are talking completely different football types. i don't think presents the same type of ff potentail that fev is capable of.

And in fact because of his frame (and not his weight) i cannot ever see him making it as a KPP. Plenty to offer...and would agree with Sumo on the Richard denis comparison.

While I don't think he could replace at Fev at FF, I reckon he would be excellent as an athletic Centre Half Forward.

With regard to the accuracy of Brad's kicking - I understood [from discussion here and elsewhere] that the latest surgery 'fixed up' the nagging problem he had with his knee - a problem which was affecting his kicking.

In other words, he's a chance to be more accurate this time round

Fev has more talent in his little finger than anyone else on our list.
Fev could have kicked 10 today in among that rabble...

I would say Stevens wouldn't be on that list...

Anyway, Fev was still Fev tonight, a couple of times he didn't follow his man and hands on hip when Matty Scar ran around him...

Still kicked 5.5 in that train wreck.... hes a full forward.. cant ask for more in a side like ours.
Like i said Fev should leave and go to a club that would compliment him and he complimets them.. ie WC.
He wouldnt have to put up with supporters thinking he has to do it at both ends of the park....

Fev is paid to kick goals..... He got 4 tonight on Harley in the second qrt not Scarlett.

When Scarlett ran forward is it too much to ask from a supporters point of view that Fev stays with his man.. When Scarlett walked around Fev did Fev turn around and chase Scarlett - No, hands on hip.

I'm not having a go at Fev, thought he was 1 of our best players.
