Post subject: | Fev's contract and potential salary cap issues |
With all the talk about Fev's contract at the moment, I can't be the only one amongst us starting to worry about salary cap issues with the group of players that's now emerging at the Club? There's a bunch of calculations that need to take into account the contracts for all of our current list, but particularly those players who we'd deem to be the more elite of our squad are coming out of contract - at the very least, that now includes: Judd (yeh, a while away but his yearly $$ need to be considered in all of this) Fev Stevens Murphy Gibbs Kruezer Waite ??? but you've also got to take into account the second string of players of the like of Scotland (only in this list cause of his age) Fisher Walker (does he fit into the group above?) Thornton (ditto for Walker) ??? And then there's all of those up and coming players who are starting to show a bit who may well get approaches when they're out of contract. By the time they come out of contract, that may include: Russell Bower Jameson ??? And will the AFL continue to increase the salary cap increase by on a yearly basis, and if so, buy how much?? and who'd be good trade bait? I presume there are bean counters at the Club who are working on all of this on a daily basis, but i'd be really fascinated to who have TCers are interested in developing maybe even a spreadsheet of how this ll may pan out over the next five years. Anyone care to have a stab at this? |

Look, the salary cap is a piece of shit. Just about every team is over it in one way or another. Take a look at the Richmond/Holland case. This would happen at every club. You just can't poplice it as it is. And Collingwood went over their cap when they picked up Woewoedin a few years back. I know it sounds like sour grapes but the AFL pretty much picke and choose who they want to flower over, eg Essendon* were caught over not long after us and nothin much happened (small fine from memory) But anyway what I'm saying is theres always ways to do it, and I'm not suggesting cap breaches. It may mean the boys as a whole holding off on pay rises because they want to stay together, and I think this will be the case. They've been through the hard times and they can see whats ahead, there's no way known they would pass it up. Take a look at Geelong, they've managed to keep a team of stars together because playing together and having success on the field is the priority to them. I hope it is to us too. I just hope they don't get greedy like Hammill the scum. Anyway Dick will find a way. Dick always gets his way. And he said after the Judd signing that we still had loads of room and we could afford another major signing, so thats a good thing. |

The only reason why we would have salary cap issues is due to Judd's contract being front loaded to leave room for a few years time. In a few years time Fev & Stevo will go on the veterans list making more room. Not an issue for me. |

Our list is coming along very nicely, however we are still a mile off Geelong - Navy Blue Horse is right on the money |

Scotland would be earning far more than any of our kids going into their second contracts. Players earn more over time. Just because someone's a number one pick with huge potential doesn't mean they'll earn $500K plus in their second contract. Long way to go yet. |

Fev goes on the veteran's list next season and I agree with Melvey, not an issue. Think Judd's contract would be front loaded, you'd hope. |

salary cap is massive @ $8.5 million per annum! that's an average of ~$215,000 for a 40 player squad.. players like murphy, carrazzo, simpson, would be around the average ...the majority would be getting paid vastly less.. I would think that no more than 10 players would be getting paid above the average amount - but im just guessing. |

There are at least 10 clubs that have got stronger lists than ours and they manage to fit them all in. I think that the salary cap is the least of our worries. |

The club can probably take a $50,000.00 fine for beign slightly over this year cap after paying out Spacklands contract in the next couple of weeks. I'll give it a rest now, had way too many brews tonight. We out. |

They reported on the 5th qrt that Fev will be getting a 3year contract worth 2.5mill. What a load of crap I think... prob about 1.5mill for 3 years. |

What a load of crap I think... prob about 1.5mill for 3 years. He may just get it - the club will factor in the veterans rule where half will only count probably in the 2nd or 3rd year of the deal. It will probably be a back-ended deal so only half counts!!! |
