It was the days of the final 5 or 6 too.

I remember round 22 1992.

We had to go over and play the Eagles on there dunghill and we had to win to get in. If I remember, we missed only by percentage that year.

Considering I started following the Blues in 1987 (when I was 6) 1989 was damn horrible to deal with. I thought it was a given we would be in the finals every year.

Then going to school with Essendon* supporters mainly, it felt like our club had been rubbish forever, by the time 1993 came around, then we lost to them!

All these factors combined to why we HAD to win in 1995.

I remember thinking even as recently as 2001 'boy thank god we wont ever have to endure a period like 89-92 again'

I dont really put 1992 in that category though we won 14 games and missed the finals! We could win that many games this year and finish top 4!

Obviously 2002-07 have been so horrifically bad, that 89-92 period seems like a drop in the ocean, but at the time, given how successfull we had been throughout the 70s and 80s, was a bitter pill to swallow. The main reason for it, I believe, was bad recruiting & to some extent, complacency.

What did we learn from it? Well no. Considering we did even worse in the late 90s on the recruitment front, withouth the core of a Sticks, Braddles, SOS, Dean to keep us somewhat competitive....

i think that was the year of the bye and in the last 2 weeks our challengers for the 6 were stkilda and hawthorn who were both 1 game behind us with 2 weeks to play. we had pies and eagles and they both just had one game each against the dees. we just needed one of em to lose their game. from memory hawks beat the dees in a close game and ofcourse we lost our last 2.

That's right - I went to that match & was gutted!

Having a core of champion players still meant we were able to upset a few sides from 89-92. In 89 we went bloody close to beating the eventual premiers, the Hawks, at Waverley in a close one. But from memory Dunstall kicked his 100th late in the 4th, play was halted & our momentum stopped. The following year we thrashed them by 11 goals, plus beat grand finalist Essendon* twice. And of course in the worst of those years, 1991, the unforgettable win over the undefeated WCE at PP. We actually went pretty close to beating the Eagles again at PP in 1992, but big Earl had a horror 3rd qtr where he marked everything but kicked something like 0.4

Watched that game at the Mt Erica with a bunch of Richmond mates. It was live on one of those dodgy mid 90s live pub telecasts. One of my worst afternoons watching football.

That's one of the worst things about the last few years - the losses ended up not hurting very much. I remember games pre-2002 really stinging.

Was in front of the beloved Heatley that day, and didn't realise that when Sticks left the ground in the 2nd (?) quarter with an ankle injury, that he'd never play again :(

If 1989-1992 were the killer years what name do we give the 2002-2007 era?
