Post subject: | 15 Games Ordered |
A few weeks ago (the goons at Name A Game have taken their sweet time so I only have 5 so far) I ordered 15 Carlton games from the period 1991-2001 (any game from the 02-07 period I thought too depressing). Basically personal faves of mine from the time. I know some of these have been documented at the Blueseum best home and away games of the 90s, but if going over the same period of time (1991-present day) what games would you pick? 1991 V West Coast - Simon Minton-Connell late goal beating the then unbeaten Eagles 1992 V St Kilda - 40000 packed into PRinces Park, one of my favourite memories was Rhino giving us the lead going to the social club end in the 3rd quarter 1993 v Essendon* (Draw) - Well we all know this one 1993 v Hawthorn - Sticks making amends a week later 1994 v West Coast - Smashing them by 10 goals at OO, gave us real hope which was squandered. Bradles got one of the great goals as well 1995 v Essendon* - Round 7 behind much of the day, won by sheer force of will of HAVING to beat the smug pricks 1995 v Geelong - One of the best home and away matches of the last 20 years, we just snuck home by 3 points, was obviously a lot more in the GF 1995 v Adelaide - Behind by nearly 5 goals in the 3rd, ended up winning by almost that much 1995 v West Coast - Another classic 1 point win 1996 v Geelong - Thrashed the Cats down on their turf in the last round of the season. Shame we had to go interstate twice and went out of the finals pretty quick 1998 v Western Bulldogs - Hamill and Whitnall running riot, we scored nearly 30 goals against the would be preliminary finalist 1999 v Essendon* (Prelim of course!) - Doesnt get much better than that 2000 v Collingwood - Nice to thrash the Pies on our home turf, it was 111 in the end, but at one stage in the last looked like we could do 150 or so 2001 v Essendon* - 3 guns missing, up steps Murray Vance, and we still won! 2001 v Essendon* - Skinny scores 5, including a great one off the ground. |

great selection.. I also have the 91 v Eagles game. I remember being there and thinking it was such a great game. I was lucky enough to have the privelage of a box for that season. Watching it years later I found out that it was a very scrappy game. Mill Hanna played a great game as did Fotia! One of the commentators was Don Scott. Weird man. Very weird man. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But we still win! One of the great things about getting these games is the commentating of the time, using popular terms of the moment, and things which sound ridiculously funny in hindsight (or in a case I mention below, a week later) 99 Preliminary Final John Russo was commentating during 7's misguided attempt to bring us greater insight into umpiring. Its painful to hear Gerard Healy try and bring him into the conversation at any given moment, and Russo just ramble on about 'prior opportunity' ad nauseum. Gerard Healy made a comment in the 3rd quarter along the lines of 'I dont mean to write Carlton off but you cant help but salivate at the prospect of Long V Pickett next week. I also remember a 'I'd like to see that' reference ![]() Drew Morphett takes the cake though mentioning the immortal lines after the game had finished, regarding the impending state election that evening 'maybe after this, Labor will win the election!'. I just need to get my hands on a match when Peter McKenna did his short lived sitting in the top deck of the Great Southern Stand to 'keep an eye on the forwards'. No bloody wonder 7 lost the rights! |

Good selection. The 1995 match vs the Eagles is hard to beat. I didn't know they had a copy of that 1991 game. Sounds interesting. I liked Don Scott as a commentator. Actually, I would say he was one of the best half dozen commentators in recent memory. I liked his enthusiasm and his knowledge about the tactical side of the game. The commentators today on Channel 7 - Commeti aside - are not up to scratch. |

I remember following the 99 prelim from an internet cafe in central London at about 6.00am. There was no text commentary, you just had the scores update about once a minute. Sitting there chewing my nails in the last quarter. When we won I jumped up and yelled at the top of my lungs! A guy directly opposite me did the same thing.....we scared the s*it out of the few other people that were in there. Good times........ ![]() |

Well if you call getting smothered trying to clear the ball out of defence (in the last quarter I think) stepping up. ![]() |

Not sure of the year but I think it was 2000 when we played the Kangaroos at Princes Park and Kouta kicked 5. We had not beaten the Roos for a long time and it was a ripper game. I think Carey went into the middle at one stage to try and stop Kouta and Kouta just dominated. |

Yep, right in the middle of his unstoppable run. For memory, he had 38 touches, 12 marks and five goals or something. |

And that was back in the day when 12 marks and 38 possies actually meant something. Awesome performance. |

Wasn't the 1 point win over West Coast in 1996? When Kouta pretty much took on the whole Eagles side. Oh, I see we beat them by 1 point in late 95 as well. I'd throw the '96 one in the mix for sure. |

Does anyone have that on video. I actually "did a runner" onto the ground after the final siren (those were the days pre-$5k fines) and found myself out in the centre with the players wondering what to do. I also stood adjacent to the players as they chaired Earl Spalding off for a miestone. Would be interested to know if I made it on camera. |

I remember a few years earlier against St Kilda, Kernahan kicked 10 and Winmar kicked 7...for some reason I believe members of the crowd chaired Kernahan off the ground for such a heroic performance. |

We also beat them by a point in 1993 as well (Mainwearing hitting the post on the siren at Subiaco) As for players being chaired off the ground, Murray Vance was after the Round 3 2001 game as well, but for a vastly different reason to what Sticks was. |

Did we win? Yup 133 to 132. Winmar actually kicked 8 and got 3 Brownlow votes. |

Going on from that in 1991, I remember Karl Langdon being assulted by a Carlton fan after the match, was that also you? |
