No way - Scarlett is a great player but he hasn't had to play on the great forwards the way Silvagni did.

actualluy the scartlet v SOS things doesn't bother me - the later player al;ways has the advantage of being in the eyes of the people speakign rather than memory.

But I really hate the shit about Dench being the first rebounder - have a look at Southby's bouncing runs

and even Racehorse Hall would take off from fullback

idiots

Carlton invented everything good about this game

the rest was invented by dicks trying to undermine us!

and as for SOS, he is and always will be full back of the century!

I've never seen Scarlett go forward and kick 8 goals in a game.

SOS had way more tricks.

Well said. The proof is in the pudding.

SOS has done it all...Scarlett will always be playing catch up. (without disrespect to Scarlett, who I believe is a great FB...just not the greatest).

...and what about that mark against the Pies as a 19 yo.
...and what about...and so on...

Southby is ahead of Scarlett (and imo ahead of SOS), and the fact that SOS was FB of the 20thC....enough said.

no, no, no....I must add...The Century!!!

I dont think they're asking who was the better all round player.

SOS is still a better Full-Back though. Its an unfair comparison though as Scarlett, or any other full-back, will never have the opportunity to play on the quality players SOS did week in and week out.

SOS gets un unfair rap for his kicking as well. He could shank them, but in general his field kicking was pretty good.

Only thing Scarlett does better than SOS is keep his feet. This was SOS's major (or minor) downfall, particularly in his first 5 years. Other than that - SOS was a better kick (Scarlett can only short pass it seems), a better spoiler, a better mark, etc.

Actually - despite Scarlett being related to Bruce Doull, I think I rate Tom Harley on a par. Both very good defenders, but not yet in the class of Stephen Silvagni who played on better forwards. That's not to say Lockett and Dunstall didn't have their day out against SOS - they did - but if I were coach of Geelong for a day - I'd double team Lockett and Dunstall (Fitzroy did this successfully in 1994 with Zanotti and Hawking), and if I were coach of the Blues for a day - I'd have put my faith in SOS doing the job.

??

Scarlett's Mum, Glynnis is first cousin of Bruce Doull.

Anyway - the better comparison as far as playing style goes is Doull to Scarlett...not Scarlett to Silvagni. But Scarlett definitely full-back of the team of the 'Naughties' (00's)...despite what Rutten does in the next 2 years. Sorry Pie fans...Clement was overrated and not a genuine full-back.

You'd get more argument from Essendon* and Brisbane fans...and your response for Fletcher would be the same as for Clement.

That's only because SOS spends 90% of his time flying on opponents' shoulders.

Er just as likely a call as saying Scarlett better than SOS.

Ridiculous non-article.

Though we're talking about it :-)

It's hard to rate them as most have said.

Another dumb article.

If SOS was playing the game today he'd play it differently to the way he played it during his career.

If Scarlett had played during the 80s and 90s he'd have been a different player too.

The direct comparison is too hard to make - you need to judge them based on the way the game was played during their time.

Considering the eras in which they played SOS is the best full back of his era and Scarlett's the best full back in his era.

As far as backmen go however Doull shits on both of them and could have played his style of game in either era comfortably.

Don't need to take it further.

True enough.
I reckon he should have written an autobiograpy and called it, 'Punched Away'.
I came to that conclusion one day whilst listening on the radio and the commentators kept saying, 'punched away by Bruce Doull'.
