We looked much much better last night having a midfield rotation involving judd, murph, hadley, stevens, gibbs, with much less reliance on simpson and carrazzo in the centre.

actually difficult to find a role for carrazzo moving forward. perhaps use him as our close-checking marker (instead of bannister) and free up a spot for anderson or possibly grigg?

Agree. Carrots looked like a headless chook last night. He is more suited to being permanently in the centre square, but that isn't going to happen with Stevens back and Judd now playing for us.

He lacks pace to play on the flanks, so not sure what his future is - I suspect a back up in case one of Stevens, Judd or Murph get injured.

The idea is to develop a Brisbane like midfield, where they had the big four in Voss-Akermanis-Black-Lappin, and players like Power etc to rotate in.

We need it to be possibly Judd-Stevens-Murphy-Gibbs with Hadley, Carrazzo, Simpson amongst others to rotate in.

And we need to get a backline like they had.

And a J Brown, A Lynch, D Bradshaw like combo going up forward.

Carrazzo has shown he is one of our few genuinely accountable midfielders, he just needs to be told that his place in the team is dependant on tackles, spoils and clearances and not large possession hauls.

Simmo is either seriously out of form, or being tagged to stop his run? Haven't really watched him that closely as you can generally 100% guarantee effort and a good game by him.

Simmo had a shocking start to last year as well, i think that was due to ilness but im not sure about this year.

One thing I noticed about Simmo last night - he needs to look over his right shoulder when kicking intot he forward line. He has a tendency (natural I suppose) to run towards the left as he's sizing up options - twice he had an opportunity to hit an unmarked target if he had of looked right.

i hear people in the crowd yelling out unwarranted criticism at carrazzo that he's grown a big head since winning the b&f last year. imo this could not be further from the truth. by all reports, he had one of the best pre-seasons at the club (according to ratts it was the best). i think he's one of the few people on our list who has been negatively affected by judd's arrival and stevens' return. well doen to carrazzo for stepping up last year and offering a great replacement for them in their absence but i think he'll struggle from now onwards. his best position is in the centre where he's able to get the clearances and the hard ball. now with judd and stevens back in, he is being forced to spend less time in the centre and mroe time in other psoitions that he isn't suited to. while he won't be as good in any other position as he was in the centre, i think for this season we're best off making him play a defensive role on the half back flank. he used to play this role in about 2004 or 2005 and from memory came 9th in our b&f. i think there's still a spot for him in the team but when he's not in the centre i think he should be playing a defensive role.

This is normal, all of our previous Best & Fairest winners in recent years have gone shit and ended up being relisted or simply out of the club.

simmo needs to kearn to kick on the right, gets caught out way too many times trying to get on his left

i don't understand why he does this it makes his game so much more preictable and easy to stop for the opposition. honestly, he's got a great right foot kick i don't think i've ever seen him do a bad right foot kick he just never uses it. and when he gets it he loves to run out wide to the left and in the process eliminates all the options he had on the right side of where he is running from. far too predictable it's not a skill issue just a bad habit.

And a low count of running into team mates in-play would be a handy criterion...

The amount of times he did this last night was staggering, and unfortunately he wasn't alone.

They both still have a place in the team, when Carrots switched on he drilled his passes a bit lower instead of the some of the floaters he sent Fev's way early in the game.

I don't back Anderson to take his role in its entirety, and we could probably make a case to go a little shorter... maybe drop Cloke for someone like Browne?

EDIT: Bower for Browne might be a better move

If 21 possessions and a goal is a terrible performance, whilst no longer (rightly) having to be one of the top four midfielders, I don't know what we are expecting.

Nuts.

verbs i think the critical thing with carrazzo is his lack of effectiveness when in possession. I love the way he has busted a gut to make it as an afl listed player and he deserved the B&F award last year. BUT he isn't (in my view) as offensively effective as others are likely to be. Include Pfeiffer in the midfield rotations, too (add to judd, murph, gibbs, hadley and stevens (as long as fit)). Most of carrazzo's possessions seem to come taking two steps backwards out of a pack, and the opposition just wait for him to kick to a contest.

i don't mind simpson in a run-with role or playing off the flank with bursts in midfield - i love his competitiveness and general effectiveness with disposal.

last night it looked like simmo had the job of minding alwyn davey. nothing davey did springs to mind so i guess he did a good job. id prefer he just be used on the wing though, thats where he does the most damage for us.

agreed. he's a great offensive weapon we have and we should use him in that role.

Simmo should have been made co captain with Juddy ... I think we really took something away from him when we failed to evn make him vice captain ... he was the best of our stand in captains last year
