A friend was just complaining to me about the umpires calling 'play on' so quickly after a mark this year, and it made me remember the Waite incident.

I'm surprised more wasn't made of this after the game, I was absolutely fuming at the time.

Waite had barely gone back for his kick and was smashed in the back by a tackle, penalised, and the Tigers gifted an easy goal.

I believe it literally swung the momentum of the match for the Tigers, and is surely one of the worst @#$%&! decisions I've seen paid in AFL.

I'm so angry now that I'm thinking of it again.

Couldn't believe that one either!

Another one i want an explanation for was on the opposite side when the original kick was given but then Eddie Betts smothered it and the ump paid 50m, maybe i missed something but it didn't look like he did anything wrong? :?

The umpiring accross the board in all games was a trifle confusing on the weekend. It always is early in the season then it tends to settle down .

Red hot on in the back with a guy tackling from behind

If Waite moved off the line then Buddy Franklin should be called to play on at every set shot he takes.

It was a completely pox decision, but players have to get over it. To say it swung the momentum of the game forgives Carlton for finding ways to lose when they should have won by 8-10 goals the way they were playing in the first half.

The decision was crap but to go on and lose against rot like Richmond in the manner we did is worse.

The boys have to keep focus.

Who's umpire number 6? He was responsible for nearly all the horrible free kicks including the Waite one and the one where Richo got smashed by Jamieson and he waved play on.

Number 6 is going to become the new Goldspink.

The umpires should be gassed like badgers!

Cost us 3-4 goals directly from frees when we were 25 points up!

The decision was disgraceful, but the thing that really annoyed me was that Waite clearly did not hear a play on call - and was given no time whatsoever to respond to it.

In times gone by when such an incident has occurred there was at least some benefit of the doubt if a player was clearly unaware of play on being called & a ball-up would be called.

You see this all the time when a player thinks he has taken a mark - the umpire up field calls touched-play on, and the guy gets tackled unaware play on has been called - the umps have nearly always bounced the ball under such circumstnces.

- Richo having two hands around Jamison's waist to shepherd Browns goal.

- Richo putting one hand in the middle of Jamisons back to kick his goal in the fourth quarter

- Waite holding the ball

- Polak not called for holding the ball even though he dragged the ball in twice and had 4 and a half minutes

- Judd getting swung 180 degrees before getting out the handball and getting pinged for holding the ball

Spot on. All terrible decisions.
Must add the soft one to Deledio in the goalsquare against Bannister in the 2nd quarter. Another direct goal from the umpires that helped to kill our momentum.
Then in the last quarter Bower was penalised for holding from a ball up in our 50. Another direct shot at goal from the umpires. That helped finish us off.
We shouldn't blame the umpires for our woes but our confidence is so fragile and we've lost so many games that we need things to be at least fair for us to get that breakthrough.

Umpiring decisions are almost irrelevant.

When we are good enough, not even the worst umpire will have much influence over the result 9 times out of 10.

We can't get worked up over things that have come and gone, for it's that kind of thinking that causes them to still exist and interfere with the present and future...

One of Denis Pagans old sayings springs to mind "No point looking in the rear view mirror, you have to look straight ahead"

You make a fair point FF and I'm sure that's what the players and coaches are thinking but as supporters I'm sure we're entitled to bitch and moan a little. I mean, what we write here doesn't affect what the players are thinking or doing at all but it does help us to vent our frustrations.
That Waite play on call was ridiculous.

Your right the decision was very poor, but getting angry about it helps no one......We have such a young and impressionable side and I get the feeling that some players have a flirt with our site, so i think we are obliged to help them be positive if we want them to be just that.

We have to help them understand that to be succesful you have to always be on the move in one direction, forward.

There will always be bad decisions, which is just one of the testing elements of football, now how we react to that adversity, or any problem life decides to throw at you, determins the extent of the issue....The issue itself is always neutral..........

i think it turned out to be a watershed moment in the match. it directly gave them a goal and just tipped the momentum every so slightly more their way. shocking decision, but certainly not the only instant of it happening this past weekend. saw it in the collingwood and saints games too.

Glad someone brought this up.

I only saw a bit of the Collingwood - Freo game, but on 2 occasions, there were Collingwood players 'lurking' (but not as well as R Ashman used to lurk at the bottom of packs!) behind the Freo player who had taken a mark / received a free kick. When play on was called, they went in to tackle.

In each of those occasions, the Freo player was able to get free, but it made me wonder whether the Collingwood players were instructed to sit behind the player with the ball. If this is the case, expect to see more of it, and expect it to become and issue that will need to be dealt with.
