Defenders are the most revered of our football heroes. Within the Australian psyche is a near-compulsion to support the underdog, especially on the football field. And while it’s true that marks and goals from clever play by forwards do provide much of the spectacular entertainment of our game, it is the consistently honest and brave defenders who are truly loved.

Some people may be surprised that Wes Lofts does not make the list of our top 5 full backs of all time.

I certainly dont have a problem with that either.

He was left out of our 1970 Grand Final side in favour of Kevin Hall and John Nicholls did not rate him highly in his autobiography "Big Nick".

Wes Lofts certainly made a huge and positive contribution to the Carlton Football Club as a Committee Member and Chairman of Selectors during our golden age during the late 70s/early 80s.

Interesting how others may see this.

With such an esteemed array inc Doull, Silvagni, Southby, Hall, Chitty and the like - it's no real surprise at all i'd have thought.
