I am going to get my backside kicked for this but I would love to see Thornton captain next year.

Here are my reasons

- he will be around the club for a long time
- shows more pride than any other current player in the navey blue
- it would elevate his game to another level

To me he would be a gun captain

Why would you get your butt kicked for that?

I could think of worse options.

However, Bret strikes me as a guy who would take too much weight and responsibility on his own shoulders and his game might suffer. He's only 21 or so - in 2 years time he'd be ideal.

The succession is a big issue though isn't it?

no argument here.

he shows the desire, he shows the commitment, he plays in a KP, he bleeds for the team, and he bleeds for the players.

perfect captain IMO

Yup, I'm on the T-bird for captain bandwagon too.

Name one player on our list that has done more to deserve it?

Nick Stevens.
Why give it to a backman when they aren't in majority of the action!!!!!

I don't get this whole "Captain has to be a midfielder" tripe. Kernahan did an ok (read: f*cking awesome) job of it and didn't play in the midfield.

If the guy can lead, who gives a rats what position he plays in?

last year i was on the stevens for captain bandwagon.

i've been a little disappointed with nick this year for all the reasons mentioned in the numerous threads over the past 2 days.

i think we could do worse than appoint thornton. he's just about the only one with a bit of mongrel in him. the rest think they are playing cricket at lords in the 1800s ... it's gentlemen rules out there apparently!

i know it's unfair to judge on body language, everyone reacts differently to stuff, but he, along with waite, seem to be the ones that show the hurt most.

agree with Deano on this point.

While it is normal for the "on-ballers" to get the gig - T-Brid is our CHB - a position of utmost importance, for not only the position he plays but he can and will become a figure of outmost importance as he grows in stature and IMO Thorton is the type of player with the character that captaincy would not suffer at all from, indeed, i think he will thrive in the position.

He is strong willed, all class, will motivate his team around him through his actions, he will rip into anyone that he thinks he deserves, but he will also talk up anyone that does succeed.

Im on the bandwagaon - indeed ive changed my sig becuase of it.

I think a few people have been a bit unfair on Stevo.

For mine, he has had to do the work of at least 1-2 other guys and really busts a gut when he plays and it has gradually worn him down to the point where he has now hurt his knee and will be out for two weeks.

He's definitely not getting the support he needs and deserves.

Ponkstar thought my butt would be kicked by the Kouta fans on this site, and dont get me wrong as a player I worship him also to me not only the succession of captain but the leadership group is a major concern and this guy (Thornton) could be just what is needed to start fixing the problem.

And Deano, Kernahan to me is the best captain I have ever seen of any club champ I might be wrong on this but I think it was Collo who said he was the best captain we have ever had which is a hugh statement considering we had Big Nick and all, would love some of his leadership to rub off on the current team

Couldn't agree more PJ. Stevo for captain with T-Bird & Waite vice captains.

dont dispute that one bit PJ - and it is tough on Stevens and it would be a bloody bitter pill for Stevens to swallow, indeed it may force him to even leave the club and follow his boyhood dream of playing for Collingwood.

However, Thorton for mine, is everything a captain should be.

It's interesting, looks like there are two definite camps - Stevens and Thornton.

Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately - Waite is the only other player i think "deserves" to be captain, however i dont feel it would sit as comfortably with him as would Stevens or Thorton.

Certainly part of the leadership group.

Thorton - Captain
Stevens - Vice Captain
Waite - Deputy Vice Captain

That is all a leadership group should involve. None of this crap where you have 5 blokes all saying something different.

3 Leaders - all playing in a seperate part of the ground, all inspiring those around them, is the only way to go, and luckily for us, the players i reckon deserve it all play in different positions of the park.

Look - i must let is be known, i certainly wouldnt be dissappointed if Stevens became the captain either with Thorton VC, not at all, but for my mine, i think Thorton is one of those rare characters that will thrive in the position of Captain.

Personally, I'd have Stevens as captain, T-Bird as Vice Captain, and either Teague/Waite/French as Deputy Vice.
Preferably French.

I don't think Stevens will leave us and go to Collingwood.
While we are ALMOST as bad as Collingwood, their playing list is shit and he'd be under even more pressure to perform at Collingwood than he is here at Carlton.

Thornton for captain - you've got a vote of support here.

Demands 100% from his teammates - something I don't think the current captain/vice-captain demand. 50% is alright for them it would seem.

i reckon this deserves a poll.

macfart - you should be able to edit your original post and add a poll.

Do it something along the lines of

Who Should our Next Captin be

1. Leave Kouta Captain until he retires.
2. Stevens as Captain as of Next Year.
3. Thorton as Captain as of Next Year.

What about the "Replace Collo with Synbad" option?
