Where does a Carlton premiership fit in?

One of the conditions of (chief executive) Greg (Swann) joining the group, one of the conditions of (Chris) Judd joining the group was that I stay. I agreed to stay for at least two years, maybe longer. Judd made a statement - the reason he came to Carlton was because he saw opportunities here, particularly in big business with Dick Pratt.

What was your part in securing Juddy?

I came in late in the piece. Steven Icke (football operations manager) and others knew he wanted to come back to Melbourne. I talked to (John) Worsfold on the phone and asked him whether he would support Carlton getting him. He said he had a soft spot for Carlton (from his time as assistant coach) and he'd do anything he could to see that he did come to Carlton.

Yeah, I made the odd phone call, but nothing that would have swayed him.

How many games can Carlton win this year?

"Eight. I said that last year, too. I'll get it right at some point."

Are you friends with Ahmed?

Sure, he lends me a lot of money.

I saw you the day you took the job and I thought there was genuine excitment.

Yes, I was genuinely excited, and everybody has said that they're pleased that I came and we're looking forward to a better year this year. We even got first pick of the draft.

That was a fluke, wasn't it?

Even Melbourne beat us.

So, did the club always try to win?

Yes, of course.

No. I've got no problem with anybody's salary. Get a good man, anything you pay him is not enough. Get a bad man and anything you pay him is too much.

Sensational article. Richard Pratt will always be remembered as the man who got Carlton back on its feet when everyone thought the end had come. We (the supporters) should be dedicating a round a year to this guy where we do something that stands out and people know is soley for Sir Richard. Just so he knows that all of us are 100% truly behind him and want to show an appreciation for everything he's done. He really is the modern day messiah for the Carlton Football Club.

Sensible people advise others not to listen to Smith, and honestly they are probably right. However I love it - the lather he works himself up into over things no one else cares about is great to laugh at. He's really succeeded in putting Pratt's price fixing issue back on the agenda hasn't he?
