The kid was picked at number 9 in the draft.

He's played in the SANFL (including finals) which is the best comp outside of the AFL.

He's had a couple of good runs with the Ants. Let's see if he's up to it - just like we did with Walker last year.

Would like to see Blackwell get a run as well

(Note: someone tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't Russell the only first round pick from 2004 NOT to get a game yet)?

I wouldnt mind seeing Russell, Blackwell et cget a game/s soon...not all together at the same time but just blooded and given a taste....and of course Chris Bryan..

Jordan Russell because of his high ranking as a draft pick has a lot of expectation on him and by rights should be a A Grade player when his apprenticeship is finished...I hope he doesnt become a a whipping boy ie Livo if that apprenticeship turns out to be longer than expected....we really need Walker, Simpson, Russell, Hartlett, Blackwell, Sentanta peaking together and being part of the core of the next era..

Could have swore McQualter played a game earlier this year... then again maybe it was Wizard cup...

Captain Optimistic thinks it is a good sign that people have, until now, not been mentioning our number 1 pick. In past years we would have been relying on him to be our lifesaver. It bodes well for the future that that is no longer the case.

He's showing improvement but he's not ready for seniors yet. Let's not permanetly scar the kid by playing him too early.

My view is he's not ready.
I think you need to justify your position regardless of underage form.
He does not deserve to be in the seniors on VFL form IMHO, Jesse D Smith would be more likely (although rookie).
Jordy needs to show more, maybe in the latter rounds you can give anyone a go, but this early it is important to let guys know reputation means nothing. Effort and performance does hence why Walks got dropped earlier this season. Chris Bryan on the other hand has shown solid consistent performances.

Andain: Jarrad aside who sat out a season in the magoos, were Fisher, Davies, Betts, Walker, Cooney, Tambling, Deledio, Roughhead, Franklin etc. effected by being given a taste? The obvious situatiuon is simply give Jordo a run off the bench and who knows he just might grab the opportunity with both hands. Its a pity some of those in the senior side haven't grasped the nettle!

It bothers me that we will make examples of the younger guys and send them back to the VFL (ala walks) and we wont promote youth (russell) because they need to prove themselves.

BUT

We never make the examples of the so called senior group who dont put in, rack up cheap stats, dont hit targets, dont go hard at the ball or their man.

I know most of us call for it but the Match Comittee really has to start making examples of everyone and treating everyone equally.

And why is it then whenever we lose we are only allowed to bag the lesser lights on this site ? Its always the Normans, Johnsons, Simpsons, Prenda's, McGraths etc - fault that we lose. Never the senior players ??

I'm quickly swinging around to the Synbad school of thinking - our senior high paid players do jack shit to deserve the pay, status and protection they get.

This week i would prefer to see Setanta at CHF , Russell in the guts, Clarke on a wing, Bowyer in the back pocket, Blackwell in the guts etc etc

And have a meaningful outs list containing so called senior players

At least we would have close to 22 playing their guts out for the club, the jumper and us. I would cop a 100 point loss if we at least tried !!

I desperately want to see someone run through their man because they have the ball or are in the way of the ball. Too often we pull up

We are the softest side in the league by far.

Harping back too - we all blame Fevola for being stupid and getting suspended - yes he was dumb for the attack on the face. BUT where was his teammate running in to pull Grover off him ?

The WCE - Hawks game yesterday displayed what would be nice from us.

Lynch ran through Cambell brown on a strong hard lead - nice and tough and then lo and behold about 6 hawks came in to strongly stick up for cambell brown - then lo and behold 6 eagels came in to defend Lynch

I dont think our team would fight for each other like that

I'm not condoning illegal holligan-ish behaviour just some fight, guts, spirit and determination.

Oh how we miss Hamill,Hickmott,Franchina,Hulme etc maybe not them exactly but definately their spirit !!

Betts, Cooney and Deledio were ready made players. The effect on Walker, Franklin, Fisher and Tambling is yet to be determined (Walker had a great first game but he's lost alot of confidence since). Playing Roughhead was a mistake in my opinion. Hawthorn played him because he was a high draft pick, not because he was ready and the result was he had a terrible game, got promptly dropped to the twos and must now feel a little bit out of his depth. I don't want to make the same mistake with Russell and play him too early. That's not to say that I'm against playing him this season at all, but I'd like him to have 15 or so games in the twos first.

Davies I could use as an example of a player effected by being played too early, but maybe he's just not good enough anyway.

You started this thread by saying you wanted to give him a run to see how he goes...now you're saying you don't want to play him too early and would like to see him have 15 games...all within 5 hours.

Surely I read that wrong....

Yes you read it wrong.

And yes he's a senior list player, but then so is Anthony Raso. Should we play him too just because the seniors team isn't playing very well?

Yep, see now that I did...it didn't come out that he was quoting Andain on that.

If they play him, play him for a set number of games and guarantee him at least a half of footy. That´s what shouldn´t be done, dropping a kid after one bad game ... they´ll be up and down at that age, give them a decent go.

I saw him on the weekend, he´s getting there.

Ok, forget about the metal aspect then and tell me how he's going to improve sitting on the bench? Pagan is an old school coach who doesn't rotate the bench a great deal. He'll learn more playing a full game in the twos then he will sitting on the bench for 60 minutes in between occasional 4 minute runs while a Stevens or a Camporeale take a breather.
