| Post subject: | Memories of your first game... |
Thought that I would create a thread where we could all take a trip down memory lane and write about the memories of our first game that we attended and watched the Navy Blue on the field of battle. I had been to several games as a small kid but do not remember any major details of them at all, I remember sitting in the Kenneth Luke Stand at Waverley and looking out to the field and unable to make out who the players were (and where the ball was at the time!). Also remember being in the outer at Moorabbin and seeing my Uncle get into a fight with some intoxicated Saints supporters! My first real game that I paid attention to was Carlton v Hawthorn, Round 3, 1993. I was literally dragged along to the game as I had no interest in it at the time. My parents sat me down and just said to watch. Three quarters later I was on the edge of my seat, I still remember to this day seeing Sticks Kernahan take that mark 50 metres out, go back and then kick the winning goal. Have been hooked on it ever since! The Heatley Stand always used to errupt with excitement after every single goal (we were sitting in the John Elliott Stand) and over the years we sampled each stand at Carlton. To this day the Gardiner Stand and Heatley Stand are the two areas that I will always remember fondly. My biggest regret today as a Carlton supporter... Back in 1987, as a 10 year old sitting at home, my parents asked me if I wanted to go to the Grand Final. My response was "did we play in it last year?" they replied "Yeah...", I asked whether we had won last year, reply "No..." so I decided to stay at home! |

Early eighties, probably 1981 or 82. Carlton V Essendon*. My older brother and his Essendon* supporter mate took me to Windy Hill. We stood behind the goals, it was full of Essendon* supporters. I was 11 or 12 years old. I could hardly see a thing as the Bombers smashed us. Got spat on and a beer can was thrown that ended up hitting me on the head. My brother then got fined by police for spitting at Flinders Street station, only problem was he didn’t do it. But I got to see my Carlton heroes that day, Doull, Johnston, Hunter and The Buzz so all in all it was a great day ha ha ha….. and I've been addicted ever since. It also explains why I hate the Bombers more than anyone else. |

I remember the first game i went to fairly well. Was in 1994 against Collingwood, it was towards the end of the season. I would of only been about 10 year old but the one thing i remember was Fraser Brown starting a brawl and getting reported. Needless to say, the Blues won in style winning by about 40-50 points

1983, vs Melbourne at Princes Park. My dad took me & we sat at the back of the Heatley Stand. It was Doully's 300th & unfortunately we lost for him, but I can still remember seeing Fitzy & the Buzz, & that was the main thing for me. Bought a Carlton flag that day which I still have. |

The first game I saw live was in 1962 vs Fitzroy at Brunswick Street Oval and the Blues won by a point! I can still remember standing in the outer with my father - I was 8 years old - and not being able to see much of the game apart from the ball sailing through the air above the heads of the crowd around me. I think from memory the goalposts had a pointed wrought iron cap on them (funny what sticks in your mind). The only other game I saw that year was the final H&A game at the MCG vs Melbourne. Unfortunately we lost badly but came out the very next week and beat them in the First Semi Final. |

It's pretty hard to pin point one game in particular, my dad used to take me along at a pretty early age, probably around 1979, we have had our differences over the years and may not be as close as other fathers and sons but I will always remember and am grateful for our times at the footy. I can still clearly remember driving to the games, listening to 3AW, they always played the same ads and I got excited as it meant it was nearly time to get there. Anyone else remember 'Tate Timberrrrrrrrrr'?? Anyway, he worked in the media, did around the grounds on 3UZ, so my earliest games were in the press box, back then they let kids in, I always remember people telling me to be quiet in there but I didn't really understand why. One day at Princes Park, after kicking the ball on the ground, my dad managed to snare an interview with Jezza, we were in the rooms and he said he would be back soon. I just hung around, a little 7 year old kicking the ball to myself, anyway, time went by and everyone was leaving, the doorman kicked me out - into the race - I can still remember getting upset and feeling the relief as my dad picked me up, I'd always fall asleep on the way home - listening to 6:00 rock on 3KZ, I think the presenter was a guy named Don Lun or something - he barracked for the blues and would always go a little crazy when we won. Sorry to ramble on, but it's all coming back to me, nearly 30 years later. So first real clear game? I remember Percy Jones mssing a sitter for us to lose against North at home (around 1979-1980), I also remember going to Arden St watching us lose by about 110 points - think that was in 83', the week after they got beaten by about 160 points by Fitzroy. I remember watching Rhys Jones playing for the swans and fighting with Carlton players in the goal square. I remember going to the finals at Waverley - M Fraser arriving my helicopter was big news and we lost to Richmond before taking the flag. Obviously it's all a blur, but good memories, a shame that my dad doesn't go anymore and when he did go I didn't want to sit with him - we would fight to much. Maybe I'll drag him to a game this year............before the opportunity escapes me? |

Standing on beer cans to watch the action from the pavilions (standing area) at PP in 1988... lost to Swans by 6 points. I still haven't gotten over it. |

1980 or 1981 vs the Saints at Princes Park (I think it was my Birthday present) Remember Rod Ashman being bumped into the fence right in front of us which started a pretty big brawl. My younger sister started to cry because she thought the police would take away the Carlton players and my Dad told her only the Saints players were bad so the police would only take them!! |

1972 Grand Final - didn't get much better than that for a young Tassie lad on his first footy trip with his mates. Must say the memories of the Car-O-Tel Hotel in St Kilda after the footy were just a memorable..... |

vs St Kilda at Waverley in 1982. My Dad took me to the game and I don't remember much about it except Ross Ditchburn kicking 12 and we won by plenty. I couldn't wait to get on the ground after the siren so I could touch Johnno and kick my footy around. A quick check of the Blueseum tells me it was Round 16 (July 10, 1982) and we won by 76 points. |

I think my first game was either 1967 or 68, it was early in the season against Hawthorn. I stood by the fence at the Lygon street end with Dad, we watched Robert Walls in the back pocket who had just come over from Coburg..we won |

Mid-late 80s against the Roys at Princes Park. The lasting memory for me was Jimmy Buckley running down the wing from HBF. The noise as he edged closer towards the Heatley Stand was stirring! We were sitting where the Pratt Stand is, when was that built? I remember the stand we were in as being a much older, but it could just be my dodgy memory playing tricks on me. |

1976................ Prelim Final VFL PArk.............lost by a point to North........... all i remember really is Sid Jackson playing his last game............! my friend Steven Elliotts lovely father Dennis took us...............! kindest regards tommi i've never been to the football with my father.............. never been fishing with my father........... never been camping with my father......... never got drunk with my father............! you guys have some great memories.........they stay with you forever hey............nice work............! |

We were sitting where the Pratt Stand is, when was that built? I remember the stand we were in as being a much older, but it could just be my dodgy memory playing tricks on me. Pratt stand was built in sections, but was completed way before the time you have mentioned. |

My memory isn't the best either, but one that really sticks is the 1970 grand final against the Colliwobbles - down by miles at half time and Teddy Hopkins comes on and kicks goal after goal. What a comeback. Also remember standing in front of the Press Box at Princes Park, the smell of the urinal down the hill, and Percy Jones standing in the forward pocket in front of the Heatley stand. |
