((SORRY THE URL THINGO DOESN'T WORK FOR SOME REASON - YOU'LL NEED TO CUT AND PASTE!))

Does anybody remember this old school AFL game (the first of it's kind), made for the NES in 1991?!

Don't know what compelled me to track it down, surprised it's actually available to play online!

Jumped on before, played a game - Carlton Vs Collingwood (who I put in a pink guernsey) - felt the nostalgia flood back with the old 'out of bounds, on the full' - obviously a sound bite of one of the game developers.

Great little game at the time... bought the very next AFL game to come out - AFL Finals Fever... which wasn't that much better...

Enjoy! (or not)

my mate and I used to waste many hours playing that game.... we had the routine so worked out that whoever won the tap out eventually had a shot on goal.

The Nintendo game was excellent, but that Finals Fever game you mentioned has gotta be one of the best games made i reckon!

I still play it often to this very day. Not a huge fan of any of the games that come out these days, but those old school games just rock. If no one has played Final Fever then ya gotta get hold of a copy, its fantastic 8)

I think my old NES system has been recycled into car tyres or something by now.

The crowd cheering - which has been used for crowd in hundreds of pre-90s games, "Rosco's" witty quarter time comments (apparently being 10 points up equates to having the game wrapped up?!?)... the complex accuracy meter that was so, so, so far ahead of it's time...

What a game... what a game.

And yes, Finals Fever was awesome - for 1995, and covering a sport that is only really played in one country - the did a pretty good job. Control system was similar, no accuracy gauge so you could only kick in straight lines (so 8 directional keypad would allow you to kick in 8 directions, if you catch what I'm throwing)... and real player stats and skill levels.

Think I'm with you Ads - Finals Fever is much better than most of the AFL games that have come out since... just like Shane Warne 99 eclipses anything since then.

Oh yeah, with Aussie Rules Footy (the NES version) WTF is up with the three expansion teams - Darwin, Canberra and... what was it again?? Hobart that's it... Were they trying to make sure everyone was included or something??

Finals Fever was good because it was simple. I mean if you wanted to tackle your opponent all you had to do was run into him and then you got the ball. Graphics weren't flash, but it was the simple things that were good, and which kept it highly addictive, still to this day.

After you win they played the club theme song and it kept track of every players stats including kicks, hballs, marks, goals and behinds. It even had Fitzroy!!

Whats everyones thoughts on the most recent games? Finals Fever was released in 1996, but they released AFL98 and AFL99 on EA Sports a few years after which were giant flops in my view. They have released a few more versions in the past several years but they are all too hard to play.

They are too 3D and the controls are too hard to control. You just cant beat those simple games if ya ask me.

There was nothing better in Finals Fever than taking a hanger in the back line to stop the oppostion's charge towards the goals...

I remember this game... remember I had to play as Geelong against my brother (who ALWAYS picked Carlton!). For the record I only went for Geelong in the game as they were the same colours as the Blues.

The only real memory I have of the game is getting possession of the ball on the boundary line almost in line with all the posts, pressed the button to have a shot on goal, got the marker right in the middle and threaded the eye of the needle to hit the front...

Those were the days though, when graphics on a Nintendo were simply amazing - anyone remember that stupid "Power Glove"?

The Power Glove - forever immortalized in the 80s geek gaming epic "The Wizard" (starring Fred Savage).

The most useless peripheral ever invented. I had to own one.

i remember finals fever!!! what a cracking game. pretty simple stuff, altho having to alter the team every time you opened up a new game was verrrry annoying, especially if like me you wanted brett heaver in the starting 18.

enjoyed battering pretty much every team comfortably...altho i recall having tight matches against fitzroy for some reason.
