Did anybody go to the Round 12 shellacking at the hands of Hawthorn last year?!



I know it may be painful to dredge this back up now...

Round 12 – Carlton 12.8 (80) lost to Hawthorn 27.18 (180)



Firstly I remember thinking that Carlton was given good odds to win the match, so I chucked a wad (a little too much in hindsight) on us winning - on us winning and Carlton kicking the first point and us winning and Fisher kicking the most goals.

Obviously, not one of those things happened.

I rocked up to Telstra Dome stoked to hear that Buddy Franklin was scrubbed from the game and how this night was going to be a Navy Blue Night.

Suprisingly, I don't remember our belting last year - and I was already half pissed before the match so I got completely demolished afterwards and blew my chance with a couple of Canadian University exchange students... (seriously!)

...all thanks to Hawthorn.

For this reason, Hawthorn has now been elevated in order of hatred to the highest level - that level that is shared with the Filth, the Scum, and the Aints.

That's why I'm going to watch the match this weekend, not expecting to win, not running out onto the ground to headbutt a Hawks player (but wanting to) - but going to the match to cheer on the Old Dark Navy Blues...

It was the only game I got to go to all year

Very painful event given the hype of the week.

You might recall the fog, but perhaps you have forgotten that this was a record crowd (including Canadians).

I remember hearing the news about Buddy while i was on the train to the game, i told a few people who were sitting around me and most of them called up to change there tips, geez i was confident that night.

I shudder to think where we would be today had we won this game.

Coming off the back of a good performance against the Bulldogs (who proved to be next to useless for the rest of the year).

Can you imagine the false and empty bravado that would have filled these forums, the club, the vindication of Denis Pagan .

I would bet London to a Brick - that had we beaten Hawthorn that night and snagged a few more wins through the backend of that season we would have the following:

- Pagan still Coach
- Ratten not Coach
- Kreuzer not at Carlton
- Judd not at Carlton

It is a horror story not worth thinking about.

An Blueseum - I do remember the record crowd, but not the fog... funny that, might have correlated it with my drinking?!

I was pulling into the airport to pick up a mate back from O/S (Hawks supporter) when the news came thru Buddy was out. Proceeded to give him heaps that we were going to win until about half way through the 1st Q............

Thank god i was overseas for this. Although i did get up really early after a big night out to listen to it.

I witnessed 6 losses in a row before leaving, then went overseas, first 2 weeks i was gone we won. Then came the hawks loss, then i returned home to witness 6 more losses, then Judd.

Absolute horror.

And Brisbane. And North.

Demoralising thrashings.

Please make them stop.

I imagine it must have been truly horrendous to be there but listening to it on 774 with the Hawthorn cheer squad commentating was very depressing.

Oh yeah, do I remember.

Kids were invited by Club to form the players "guard of honour" on the night. End of highlights.

A good Hawks mate of mine at the game and at one point got the text from him , "What do u think?", my reply "Clinic!".

If Keating did our presser no doubt he'd have uttered the words - "The loss we had to have". This game really bought home that without a skillfull, mature, hard running midfield we were always going to hold up the ladder.

Had a drink with Blues mates after the game and we all agreed that this game proved our last few wins were "fools gold" and we needed ONE MORE YEAR of high draft picks, or, heaven forbid, a "Chris Judd" type player!

Oh, and it also nailed Pagan's fate for good. No pain, no gain.

Sad, sad night.
I took 2 of my SIL's with me to the match, 1 visiting from interstate. But since they took so long to get ready we were running late, then got stuck in the traffic on the Grimes bridge and sat there listening to the 1Q on the radio. Should have gone home at that point.
Managed to get into the stadium and couldn't believe the crowd, ended up sitting in the 2nd back row in members (silver) section with the fog rolling in the gap at the back on the stadium straight down my neck
Really wanted to leave at 3Q time but there was such a mass exodus that I waited 10 mins for the crowd to subside only to be left surrounded by hawks supporters.

Was at that game
I was with my Father in Law (filth supporter) and we both agreed that this would be the game that sealed Pagans fate. We were so hopelessly out coached by a rookie it was not funny. I also felt sory for Fev that night as I felt that he was hard done by the umps.
In hindsight the 2007 season what our best since 2001 - New President, New CEO, New FD Manager, Great drafting in Hadley, Judd, Kruez & Pfieffer, New Coach, Record membership, much better sponsership agreements, commencement of new training facilitys etc. It's hard to look at a little insignificant detail like the hawks game and be disappointed in our season.

It's kinda like getting headbutted in the face 18 times, then having a plastic surgeon come along and make you look like Johnny Depp... or something.

I guess - however painful - without the mega losses to Hawthorn and Brisbane we would still possibly be stuck with Pagan.

You know, I will never see a better example of running the play from stoppages - I just remember time and time and time again the ball would come to ground, a Hawks player would get the ball and pump out a handpass to one of three Hawks running past - I just remember saying to my brother 'where the hell are the carlton players?!'

I don't believe we will see a loss this great in the next 6-8 years, possibly longer... those days are over mark my words!

Didn't Ackland (or someone) gimme a goal to Croad (or someone) in the goalsquare at the end of the match to make the total 100 points?!

Don't get me wrong - I was more disappointed with bombing out with 2 Canadian exchange students...!

It's was just another smashing in a long list of humiliations year after year.

We seem to invite the mandatory three or four thrashings a year.

They all hurt.

That was the loss which destroyed me last year. Had attended the previous two games where we won, and believe it or not - finals were being talked about as an outside possibility if we had of gotten over the line against the Hawks. Record crowd for a footy match at the Dome, then Friday afternoon the news came through that Buddy had been removed from the team - I got two Hawthorn supporting mates to ring in and change their tips. And then the mother of all shellackings.

Of all the massive drubbings we have copped the last six years, that was clearly the most difficult to handle for me - probably because of all the hype which surrounded the game about the two up and coming teams etc etc... very hard to stomach.

I guess all's well that ends well.... but nights like that will take a long time to get over.

There were two up and coming teams...one with belief and one with a shudder and scare for motivation...

The best thing about this game is that a HAwks mate that I weould've been there with pulled out at the last minute. Nothing worse than having to sit out a game like that with someone cheering beside you.
