This is a bit tricky to research as there were obviously pre season cups then night time tournaments and summer series and carnivals.

Does anyone know who has won the most and how many? and how many have we won? I think Hawthorn might have won the most?

According to the AFL Media Guide:

Hawthorn has won the most (9). Next is Essendon* (6) and then Kangaroos (5).

Carl, Syd, & WB have won 4 each.

Melb & St K have won 3 each.

Fitz, Geel & PA won 2 each.

Adel, Coll & Rich have only won 1 each.

Freo, WCE & Bris have never won a Pre-Season/Night Series GF.

We won ours in '83 (vs Rich), '97 (vs Geel), '05 (vs WCE) & '07 (vs Bris).

yeah, but Sydney/South and North Melbourne had won some of their cups when the night comp. was just for teams that didn't make the finals, so technically Carlton are third on the list.

Why are we bothering with the second best prize in town? :P

Second comes right after first...even though we are coming third as far as first second prizes go.

The Blueseum has some great details - particularly on the Carlton games.

My view is that there have been three different competitions over the years that are bundled together under the Pre-season & Night Series banners.

First was the Night Series that ran from 1956 to 1971. It was played by the 8 clubs that missed the Final 4. It ran through September and extended into October on a couple of occasions. The introduction of the Final 5 in 1972 left only 7 teams available and killed off the competition.

The second phase was from 1977 to 1986. It kicked off in the pre-season but mostly ran until July. The winners are called Mid-season premiers below. The format and number of teams varied from year to year. Some of the years included all of the SANFL and WAFL clubs and rep teams from Tas, Qld, NSW & ACT. Sometimes only the top teams from SA & WA were involved. A maximum of 34 teams competed in 1980 & 1981.

1987 was the first year of the competition that we have today as it became exclusively for VFL clubs. Some might recognise 1988 as the start of the truly pre-season competition because in 1987 the final was at the end of April.

Night Series Premiers
4 Footscray (63,64,67,70)
3 South Melbourne (56,57,60)
2 North Melbourne (65,66), Hawthorn (68,69)
1 St Kilda (58), Fitzroy (59), Geelong (61), Richmond (62), Melbourne (71)

Mid-Season Premiers
3 Hawthorn (77,85,86)
2 Essendon* (81,84)
1 Fitzroy (78), Collingwood (79), North Melbourne (80), Sydney (82), Carlton (83)

Pre-Season Premiers
4 Hawthorn (88,91,92,99), Essendon* (90,93,94,00)
3 Carlton (97,05,07)
2 Melbourne (87,89), North Melbourne (95,98), St Kilda (96,04), Port Adelaide (01,02)
1 Adelaide (03), Geelong (06)

Thanks 16flags, I've used that in the Blueseum page tracking all of these competitions to highlight the differences.
