Agree with Stephen Oliver and the other one who never kicked on who i would've liked to was Rhett Baynes.

Stephen Oliver could have been anything - I reckon if David Parkin had a bit more flair and included Oliver and Koutoufides in the 1993 Grand Final Team - might have made a huge difference.

Andrew Phillips gets my vote - kid was a natural rover who was cut down in his prime. His winning goal v Collingwood in a game in 1989 was a beauty.

Steven Oliver the Nathan Ablett of the 80s & 90s - just lacked the passion to play in the city - his cause not helped when he sat his 2nd game entirely on the bench when his friends & family had driven up from Bendigo to watch him play.

I hear what you're saying - but I saw it first hand as a junior - he was pretty darn good (unlike Pat Cash who claims had he not been winning Wimbledon in '87 he would have been playing footy for Hawthorn - I shut Pat up by saying 'Even though as a Ringwood boy you were zoned to Essendon*?' Phillips also did what Craig Bradley did when he first arrived and still dabbled in their 'other' chosen sport in the off-season. IMO Phillips was a better tennis player than Bradley was cricketer.

I was also dissapointed about Norman however I think we have found a better replacement with Jamison. Justin Davies, Blake Campbell and Trent Sporn were players that initially impressed but didn't improve.

I think he was coming back from injury but in his bio he talks about being overlooked for Athorn in the 1993GF. Knowing what we know now this may sound a little silly.

Stephen Edgar another guy I liked was Stephen Edgar, sat nest to him at the footy several times and was a lovely guy. Never given much of a go but could have been a handy half bank flanker, was courageous and had footy smarts but lacked dash. was a smart guy (cant remember what uni course he was completing) and very friendly, he was mates with Brett Sholl.

Phillips not being able to make it back to big time footy was a huge loss to the club - just oozed class. Oliver was Nathan Ablett and a lot more, anybody who saw his game against the Coasters would agree that if Oliver played the 200 plus games he could have for the Blues then our Premiership count would 18, 19 or 20 now. The first season back in the bush he knocked 150 goals - and matched it or better the next season. Actually one other player who certainly was not a failure but left way before he delivered all the premierships he could have was the Buzz. He could have spent 5 seasons playing alongside Sticks - he did come back for the 86(?) pre-season and Sticks was prepared to give back the No.4 Would have meant another back-to-back if it had have happened.

I remember a frizzy haired kid wearing number 48 running around in the magoos in the early 80's and thought "this kid will be a star". He had heaps of talent, but always seemed to get injured at Carlton, before we sent him (prematurely) to the 1980's Carlton retirement home: St Kilda. Who would thought Ricky Nixon would have such humble beginnings? He had some serious football talent, but crowds were probably robbed of his best due to injury. He probably ended up with 80-100 games through St Kilda and Hawthorn though. I would have loved to have seen him play some better footy at the Blues.

For mine: Prendergast (kicked the ball like a slightly defective robot but could run all day and was a good size. One game against Adelaide I thought we were seeing glimpses of what I hoped he'd become - Kouta 2.0) Karl Norman (moved like an absolute panther, pity about his head) Luke Livingston (always backed this guy when talking football - was so sure he'd make it when he jst had a good run) Jim Plunkett / Jon McCormick

Rod Stewart/Jon McCormick With a bit of development and a bit of time could have been an integral part of the team. New how to get the ball and croon a couple of tunes.
