sorry, but it all sounds soooo familiar...

Much more believable coming from Ratts of course, but it's sending a shiver down my spine hearing these sort of lines again..

Ratten urges fans to be patient

CARLTON coach Brett Ratten has moved to temper the burgeoning optimism among the AFL club's supporters, urging them to be patient with their young list.

I understand your concerns bluey but I think Ratten has said many things and I think he's sounding different to DP who just presented a litany of glib hackneyed phrases.

I think his statements have been fair enough and his approach with the players is very different - more approachable, but offering strong leadership and authority at the same time.

That's how I see it, anyway, but you have an opinion and concerns and that's fair enough. I hope I have, in part, allayed them.

Must be hard to come up with quotes day after day in the pre-season. And to be honest, I couldn't care how he speaks or what he says to the media, the players appear to be enjoying his presence, and he'll hopefully bring a better game plan than Denis Pagan ever did.

the only thing i'll miss from the denis pagan era will be the post-match press conferences. the good old competitions we had to see who could guess closest to what cliches and one-liners denis would come up with this time.

Seems to be trying to put less pressure on himself and the team by trying to lower expectations.

Amen.

Results over media persona.

Bit early to be comparing Ratten to Pagan, even if the former hasn't won a game yet as coach.

The obvious similarity is both had a very young list. But that's where the similarities end.

Ratten we know is endevouring to implement a more possession-style game plan. While it's true we looked pretty darn average the other night, I think he needs to be given a hell of a lot more time before we hang him (Pagan had 5 years right!?).

Among the list of names who will probably play some senior football this year, you have the following who have played very little AFL football...

Bower - 12 games
Hadley - 41
Setanta - 34
Murphy - 35
Gibbs - 22
Jamison - 5
Hartlett - 4
Hampson - 2
Cloke - 27
Kreuzer - 0
Grigg - 22
Anderson - 5
Blackwell - 23
Jackson - 8
Russell - 29

And most of our mid-age players (Waite, Fisher, Walker, Carrazzo, Bentick etc) have -played under 100 games.

While it's true Pagan had most of these players at the club when he was coach, the cold hard reality is Pagan had the list for 5 years, and early on was unable to do anything with more experienced talent. Players like Hulme, McKay, Beaumont, Mckernan etc etc.

Pagan pissed a lot of personnel off, let's see how the players respond to Ratten.

Might well be Ratten's game plan is as ineffective as Pagan's, but in any event Ratten deserves some time.

What pissed me off most about Denis' gameplan was a lack of a 'Plan B'. When we were playing on at every opportunity, running teams ragged, we looked great, even when losing. But what do you when your opposition figures you out, and tightens the screws? We had nothing, except bomb-and-hope. That's what killed us.

Give Ratts a chance. From what i saw at training last Sat morning he has a very different approach to Pagan. The assistants are quality and Ratts has faith in them. The drills were like match situations and the players intensity showed they will play for their coach.I wouldn`t be suprised to see some of the lesser lights really improve under him with perhaps a bolter that nobody expected.

As Gary Ayres said, you don't know what the hell you're doing out there until you've played 50 games. I'm pretty sure Ratts is simply doing the smart thing and taking the pressure off the boys (at least publicly anyway)

ps. I'm pretty sure Grigga's only played 5 games.

Can't wait to see how Ratts goes in 2008. He was highly regarded at Melbourne for his work with their midflied & even in those last games of 07 our ball carriers looked more creative & dangerous.

At training on Sat there was an emphasis on providing close in options for the player with the ball. In the simulation toward the end he (& Stevens) repeatedly stressed to them to have an option in space out the back of the pack to get it to quickly when the player with the ball is under pressure.

He joined in a couple of the drills too...& still has excellent skills 8)

Unless you're Chris Judd......or as Ayres would say, except for the Judd's...
