| Post subject: | Is Judd our biggest recruit ever? |
I'm not sure what the poster's name is, but somebody at TC (who runs Blueseum I think) posted a little while back about the 'other' great recruits the Blues have had over the journey, like Barassi and Williams etc etc. My question is, is Judd the biggest recruit we have ever had? The main criteria here, is how big a name and how great a player was the recruit, when they were recruited to the navy Blues? Obviously some of these players, like Diesel went on to become even greater players after they crossed to the Blues, so I suppose this needs to be factored into things as well, where applicable. I have been watching footy and the Blues since around 1980, so I really don't know how great Barassi was and how big a deal it was when he crossed over. So I really can't comment on Barassi. And Diesel of course was a Brownlow medallist (like Judd) and at the time pretty much considered the best midfielder (or one of) in the game. For me, Diesel is one of the greatest players of all time. His inclusion in the Team of the Century and his ability to find the ball at will and his ability to hit targets with the most remarkable handballs, confirms this for me. Do we think Judd, when he eventually hangs up the boots (hopefully in 10 years) will go down as an even bigger great in the game? |

I firmly believe he's the greatest player to ever play the game, so that'd make him the best recruit in my mind. |

I can still feel the excitment of his prescence that he created even though you knew he was just about finished as a footballer when he came across from Melbourne. I can still remember him taking the filth apart one day at Victoria Park when we were well down at half time They were exciting times |

His transfer to Carlton sent shockwaves through the league as he was a living legend who had played in 6 premierships at Melbourne. Barassi for impact on the club and the competition (no one player can have that sort of impact these days - you need guys like Pratt and Swann behind the scenes in a way that you didn't in the 60s) but from a playing perspective it may well be Judd. Williams was the best player I've seen cross over to the light but Judd has years in the tank to overtake him and if we get 10 great years (and three or four flags) from Judd his playing impact will be more significant than Williams' in his 6 years (and one flag). |

Andrew Eccles is the man...wata unit... I think he is probably the best ever...premiership captain...brownlow...norm smith...going on achievements you would have to say yes... still...Woewodin won a brownlow too... definitely biggest in my generation... |

..i reckon Barassi is the biggest recruit/trade of all time, not only for the big impact it had on carlton, but the bigger and long last impact it had on melbourne.. ..they still haven't recovered.. |

The point wasn't to say one recruit was better than another, just that we have had some high profile recruits in the past. Besides, the history pages for Chris Judd have yet to be written so it is hard to say who changed the Blues for the better the most. From the Blueseum |

I was at high school when Ron Barassi came to Carlton. Front page news, TV etc. kids, adults crying. Letters to the newspapers. It was a coup! We lived in Ormond which was in Melbourne's recruiting area. It seemed like every second kid was a Melbourne supporter with the No31 on the back of his/her jumper, especially in the late 50's. I seemed like I was one of the few Carlton supporters at both primary and secondary school. Ron Barassi was huge, bigger than any present day player in this city. He was the player who had to be stopped if you wanted a chance to beat Melbourne. Melbourne were unstoppable, !955-1961. Closest to them would be Brisbane at their height. He was the first of the ruck-rovers, not a great kick but what he lacked in skill he made up for in determination, guts, grit and leadership. Ron had injury problems and only played 50 games with the Blues. But he made a dramatic change at Carlton, we started winning games and many a close one in 65 and 66. But Carlton had experienced players in Nicholls and Silvagni and good ones in Gallagher and Goold, Collis Collins etc. So I think our proven depth was better then and we hadn't finished on the bottom and confidence was not rock bottom. I doubt if Judd has had such an impact on football, and he's had Kerr and Cousins sharing the load. It's hard to compare eras when nobody went off the ground unless badly injured or playing poorly. With the abuse of the inter change now every one gets a rest whether they want one or not. But Judd is only 24, Barass was 28 and nearing the end of his career. (And Ron had to coach as well.) So it will be interesting to see what impact Judd will have on our club. Maybe in 4 or 5 years when we look back it may be a different story, let's hope so. |
